Sounds like too much hassle to me (but see my screenname!). Fine if you can afford it but you would need a pretty decent laptop (very fast cpu and a good spec graphics card depending on the res of your HDTV) and that would cost a lot more than the 150 for a PCH and without the convenience. You don't necessarily need a hard drive the idea of the PCH etc. is that you stream over a network (ie. from one of your PCs perhaps via HomePlug 200mbps) and anyway hard drives are dirt cheap now. I would also doubt that the output from the laptop would look as good as either the output from a PCH or a Blu-Ray player, but I am willing to be corrected.

The only 'inconvinience' that I see with this is that it wouldn't have a remote control unit so i'd have to get out of the old armchair to stop / start /play ect. !

You could use a remote if you used Media Center.
