Making AVCHD DVD-R BD compatible discs easy

I have just bought the Samsung BD-P1500 mainly to have an easy way to watch my AVCHD camcorder footage on my tv.
This BD player is supposed to read AVCHD and I thought I could just burn the AVCHDNT and BDMV folders from the SD card directly using UDF 2.5 mode. But not so..

I found this great guide that had a workaround that works fine but it would be great to do it even easier.

Any experience with this guys ?

Re: AVCHD DVD-r on Samsung BD-P1500

A quote from the BD-P1500 owner's thread:
If someone got two 1500's at the same time from Amazon. How likely is it going to be that they have different firmware? These would have been back in July. The reason is I tried to play a AVCHD disc in one and it worked. I then tried another disc in the other player and it doesn't work.

Samsung BD-P1500 Region B UK owners thread

Perhaps yours requires a firmware upgrade (even if it's recently purchased)?

You don't say what camcorder you have, but usually the software that comes with AVCHD camcorders allows the production of AVCHD discs (usually using additional DVD burning software ie. Nero, ImgBurn etc.)

Hope you get it sorted, I've been considering one of these (mainly due to the good price).

Re: AVCHD DVD-r on Samsung BD-P1500

Thanks, my player has the newest firmware 1.4

What I believe to be correct is that the structure of an AVCHD disc and a Blu-Ray disc is quite similar. The most of the folders are the same, but some are different from each other. I do not use the software from Canon (ImageMixer 3) to make my AVCHD discs because I think it is crappy, slow and unstable.
I simply rename some of the files from the SD card, and make some required folders to match the Blu-Ray or AVCHD standard and they play flawlessly on the BD player. The conversion is done in 5 minutes even if I have to change all the .MTS extensions to .m2ts and .CPI to .clpi. I use a GREAT little piece of software called PFrank to do this in a snap for me.

What would be truly fantastic is if someone could make a script that did this renaming of files and folders automaticly. I do not think this would be difficult at all for someone with this knowledge.

The file structure for an AVCHD disk lookes like this:
\AVCHDTN\
\AVCHDTN\thumbnail.tdt2
\AVCHDTN\thumbnail.tidx
\BDMV\
\BDMV\index.bdmv
\BDMV\MovieObject.bdmv
\BDMV\BACKUP\
\BDMV\BACKUP\index.bdmv
\BDMV\BACKUP\MovieObject.bdmv
\BDMV\BACKUP\CLIPINF\
\BDMV\BACKUP\CLIPINF\00000.clpi
\BDMV\BACKUP\PLAYLIST\
\BDMV\BACKUP\PLAYLIST\00000.mpls
\BDMV\CLIPINF\
\BDMV\CLIPINF\00000.clpi
\BDMV\PLAYLIST\
\BDMV\PLAYLIST\00000.mpls
\BDMV\STREAM\
\BDMV\STREAM\00000.m2ts
\BDMV\index.bdmv
\BDMV\index.bdmv
\BDMV\index.bdmv

Read the link in my post above for the structure of a Blu-Ray disc.

The structure on the SD card from the camera is not far from this but the difference is enougth for the player to refuse it if I burn directly.
I have used files from both the Pana SD9 and the Canon HF100. No difference.

Anyone with experience on this ?

Re: AVCHD DVD-r on Samsung BD-P1500

I am kind of discussing with myself here..

I made a .bat file that will do all of the renaming and make the backup folders needed !
1. Copy the BDMV folder from your SD card to your harddrive.
2. Copy the .bat file into this folder as well.
3. Run the .bat within the folder.
4. Delete the .bat file

All files should be renamed accordingly, and a BACKUP folder should have been made with all files in it.

5. Burn the BDMV folder AVCHD DVD as UDF => Manual setting => Ver 2.50
6. Play the disc in all its beauty in your AVCHD compatible BD player or PS3..

Eaaaaasy !!!

PS: If you are afraid of opening the .bat file do it in notepad and you can see that it is harmless. It is also easy to edit the batch file to suit your own camcorder if the files are different from my HF100.
Let me know if it works out well or if there are any problems you might run into !

If your BDMV folder already contains a BACKUP folder then delete this one before running the .bat file...

Someone has hijacked your link so I can't find the .bat file.
