Importing via miniusb

Im totally new to video editing and im trying to use a panasonic d160EB and edit the movies on windows movie maker. Do i need to buy firewire or can i do this via mini usb (ive read the FAQ and i see that USB isnt reliable but it should work?)
I have it connected via mini usb and i can see the movies on the computer but can open them due to their format. How can i import them?

Thanks

Mark

Re: Importing via miniusb

Is this a tape camcorder? If so: use firewire even if the camcorder support USB
Most software don't
If it isnt a tape model .. why does it have firewire?
If it doesn have firewire ( and isnt a tape model)
Just what file format does it output?

Its this model http://www.reevoo.com/reviews/mpn/pa..._dvd_camcorder

No idea what format it outputs. Ive had a go at finalising it but the it still wouldnt see it on movie maker. Do i need to convert it to a different format? Or should i be able to change the recording format somewhere on the camcorder?

Thanks

Mark

Re: Importing via miniusb

A little explanation is needed here I think

DVD recorders ( and camcorders) record video as mpeg2, that you cannot change
Mpeg2 is the DVD video format:
mpeg2 as used in DVD video has certain dimensions of pixel size encoding rate and video frame rate ( depending on whether PAL or NTSC)

To play as a DVD video, the mpeg2 files have to be modified ,They then get to be VOB ( video object) files to be found in the Video-TS folder within a DVD video
These can be renamed to mpg but infact most editing software can recognise them as VOB
As such a DVD disc with mpeg2 files not arthored as VOB will not play on a DVD player although it will play on the PC

Your weak link here is WMM it will not recognise VOB and I dont think it does mpeg
You need better software anyhow

thanks for the excellent explanation. The software is a problem as its all we have in work. I can use something else if its free but cant pay for anything (its a school). Ive ordered a firewire card and cable, but from what your saying i still wont be able to get the videos into WMM?

Isn't the point of a DVD camcorder that you can just sling the DVD into a PC? Surely there's no need to buy cables and install cards here.

Im not sure you will get a free program that is easy to use, and reasonably well featured.. for mpeg editing
There is no reason why a school cannot pay for software.. they would even get it at a discounted rate
Saying that there are "almost free" older versions of software around . Im sure There are quite a few on here who may have discs just gathering dust if you ask

As stated above the cables aren't necessary
WMM is the problem

How little did you have? . It just might be enough
Saying that.. you might be able to use trial software ( if it is only a one off use)
