Complete Beginner - Camcorder for Video Editing

Hi All,

I would like to purchase a camcorder to capture personal events, such as travel, weddings, parties etc. I would then like to edit them onto DVD.

I'm a complete beginner at all this and I have no idea where to start! I would appreciate advice on the following:

1. What features are essential in a camcorder when Video Editing?
2. Can you suggest any camcorders for £500.
3. Things you wish you new before you bought the camera.

Thanks in advance!
