Canon HF100 / Transcend SDHC card error

I am on vacation. I got an 8GB Transcend card about 90% full when suddenly HF100 would not write to card. I switched off and removed card then replaced. Camera then said "no scenes on card" when I treid to playback video and showed only 8 mins remaining record time when I switched to camera mode.

I have now removed card. Don't have access to a PC to see what might be readable direct on card.

Would very much appreciated any guidance about best steps to recover the video on the card when I get home.

Many thanks

Don't Transcend have a lifetime gaurantee? If so, you could contact them and they could possibly get the files off for you?

Get hold of a USB card reader, plug the SD card into it and plug the reader into your PC, and check through the folders on the card. Hopefully they'll still be there and it's only the table of contents that's corrupt, resulting in the "unable to write" error. The AVCHD video files themselves will be buried within the folders, probably in a chain resembling the following: PRIVATE -> AVCHD -> BDMV -> STREAM.

The best thing to do would be to copy the SD card contents complete (i.e. not just the STREAM folder) to your PC. If there's an issue with the TOC (table of contents information files) you'll not be able to play the clips back from the camcorder, but at least you can import them into editing software on your PC, write them to DVD, etc.

When you're sure that you've copied everything across, format the SD card in the camera, and then nip off and do some throwaway shooting to test the card out, a couple of times to be on the safe side. If all goes well (i.e. it lets you fill to capacity without errors, lets you play back all the clips, etc.) format the card again.

Hope that helps.

Andrew.

Re: Canon HF100 / Transcend SDHC card error

Thanks to all for comments and suggestions.

I am home and I have been able to read all the video files off the card with an SD reader just as suggested, so panic over this time.

I wish I had a better idea what caused the problem though as I don't want to go through this again if at all possible. I'll try the format/test/reformat suggestion of courtaj in due course.

Re: Canon HF100 / Transcend SDHC card error

I too have the same problem that is mentioned above. What can be used to read the raw video files from the card? I see the files, but don't know how to open them.

THanks in advance.

Re: Canon HF100 / Transcend SDHC card error

I had the same problem with a Kingston card on a HF100. Fortunately when I put the card into a card reader, it showed all the files and I was able to copy them to the pc. See this topic:

Camcorder not reading all files on Memory card

I wonder what is causing this.
