No firewire - Can I edit?

Hi

My old video camera doesn't have a firewire port on it, only usb. Will I still be able to edit the mini dv tapes or will I run into problems? I haven't edited before, so I'm new to this. Thanks.

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

Hi,
I think they may depend upon the make & model of your camera...

Which one do you have?

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

It's a canon mv630i. It says on the canon website it has firewire, but there is no firewire port on the cam, only usb.

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

I only have the mini usb connector on the camera, and the supplied cable is USB. I'm drawing a blank really....

The supplied USB cable is often for stills or lower quality video transfer
Some MiniDv camcorderw can transfer Dv video by USB but even they have firewire as well
I suspect that you must have fire wire but it may be hidden away. The "i" often stands for the fact that its firewire is out and in
It is often marked "dv"

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

Ok, I will have a look at the camcorder. If it only has USB, does that mean that I won't be able to transfer and edit my films?

Only the very earliest( almost ancient) miniDv models did not have it , at any rate Canons spec sheet I linked says it most definitely does
None the less I would rule out USB in that model for transfer of Dv AVI from tape
Im pretty certain it does have firewire , DV , IEEE1394 or I link ( all synonyms)

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

Ok, thanks senu. I must have missed something, so I will go over the camera and post back. Thanks for the help. I am totally noob to this, and I appreciate all the help.

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

No worries good luck with it
In theory USB2 can carry DV AVi but not USB1 (as it isnt fast enough ), as such MiniDV and DV AVI ( and HDV) are linked closely to firewire traditonally
As for editing. WMM is a free bee to try but expect to outgrow it eventually

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

The firewire port is under a cover on the front of the camcorder below the mike

Re: No firewire - Can I edit?

Doh. I feel really stupid. The port was there, just like solidamber (thanks) said. Would I have to use a special lead from canon, or will any 4 pin firewire cable do?
