Thanks: Gave 5, Got 16 | Canon FS10/100/11 external mic options??
Hi,
just wondering where and which mics I could use with my Canon FS100. I thought it was a standard port and plugged in my computer mic but this didn't work at all when plugged in. Is there any other settings I need to change??
much appreciated.

Generally speaking, you'll need a microphone with its own power supply (i.e., a battery). Was the mic you tried self-powered? The camera will work with pretty much any self-powered mic with a 3.5mm jack (the standard "mini-jack" connection).

ahhh...no the computer mic drew power from the sound port so it wasn't self powered. do you have recommendations for a decent mic for under £40? and so I need one with its own power supply??

| The Rode Videomic is excellent value for money at around £69 (or £79 including the wind gag). At the more budget end of the market are the Audio Technica ATR25 and ATR55. Hama does a mic within your budget, too.
Naturally the adage "you get what you pay for" applies. Another thing to bear in mind is that the quality of the audio improves the closer the mic is to your subject (and hence the further from your camera). The good thing about the Rode Videomic and the ART55 is the "shotgun" design which concentrates on sounds from in front, helping to cut out unwanted noises.
Probably best to search out some reviews. And bear in mind that all of these mics are about as long as your camcorder, if not longer!
Andrew.

thanks I will look into them.
just a quick question what do you think of this one for its price?
will it be better than the camcorder inbuilt one?
and obviously will it work but it seems to have the right connector and runs on once battery.

I imagine it'll be fine from a compatibility perspective, i.e. it appears to have the right kind of connectors and it's self-powered, but I can't vouch for quality having never seen one in the flesh as it were. For under £20 it might be worth a punt. If you do go for it, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how it works out.
Andrew.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but I thought I'd share with you that I bought the mic I listed above from eBay and it works perfectly.
I'm surprised with the quality which seems very clear and directional so now there's no background noise. I'm not an audiophile but it's better than the built in mic for what I need.
There's some info and a review on my website.

Since I have a fs10 I'm looking for an external mic also, the thing is there is no shoe to mount the mic on the cam. What are the solutions for that?
