Vegas Pro 8 won't recognise MOD file

Hi,

I'm having trouble with Sony Vegas Pro 8, in that it won't recognise MOD files at all. I get an error message saying "None of the files dropped on Vegas Pro could be opened". That's if I drag from a windows explorer window.

If I try to browse within vegas for the file, they're not shown at all.

I've read that you can just rename the files to MPG, and that Vegas will then recognise the file, because MOD files are just mpg-2's in a container. This isn't the case, it still won't allow me add the file to the timeline.

I've used GSpot to identify the codec, and it says it's a DVD "VOB" format MPEG-2. It says the codecs are installed. The file plays fine in Windows Media Player too.

Other files work in vegas, eg other avi's and mpgs.

Does anyone know how I can fix this. Is it a codec issue? I've installed a vista codec pack, but that doesn't seem to have helped.

Thanks

Richard.

PS my camcorder is a Panasonic SDR-H20.

hi mate, check out my post I did this morning about .Mod files. It wil tell you how to use mpeg streamclip to make vegas recognise it.

Converting .MOD files to something you can edit with Guide

Re: Vegas Pro 8 won't recognise MOD file

Hi,

I tried your solution using SDCopy, but I still have the same problem. Vegas just says it can't open the file. Nor will it even attempt to add the file to the timeline when using the built-in explorer.

This is strange as it used to work fine on my old computer with windows xp and vegas 7. Now i have vista and vegas pro 8, it won't work. I'm guessing this is a codec problem with vegas. Do you have any idea if vegas needs a specific codec to play a MOD file?

Thanks

Richard.

Re: Vegas Pro 8 won't recognise MOD file

mmm chatelard...well if the SDcopy thing didn't work. there is a codec that does the audio check here for the info at the top of the page: http://eturkov.blogspot.com/2008/05/...-in-adobe.html however I don't know whether that will fix your problem in vegas.

the other option is converting the .mods to another format entirely using Mpeg Streamclip instructions http://daz4590.co.uk/wordpress/?p=64 this should definitely work so it might be worth a try at least to check vegas.

sorry I couldn't have been any more help

If you have a small file you could PM and email it to me to have a play with
You could shoot a 20 sec file for test

Re: Vegas Pro 8 won't recognise MOD file

Ok,

i've tried using streamclip, and although it creates mp4's or dv files that work (albeit with black strips either side of the video frame), mpg's still don't work, or i only get audio.

As the original files play fine in windows media player, and Gspot says the mpg2 codec is installed, there must be something amiss with vegas, but I can't find any info about it.

Does anyone know if vegas pro 8 can edit these mpg2 based mod files (on windows vista), or do I need to install an older version of vegas?

Richard.

Re: Vegas Pro 8 won't recognise MOD file

if the conversion worked fine why don't you try editing with those files instead of insisting on using .mpg??
