HDMI to DVI - playing HD camera on LCD monitor

Is there any reason that using an HDMI to DVI cable to plug a Panasonic SD9 (or equivalent) directly into an LCD computer monitor shouldn't work? Has anyone tried?

I realise that DVI won't carry audio - it's just the video I'd like to look at.

Cheers,
Andrew.

I have s Samsung PC monitor which is also an HDTV but it doesnt have HDMI . It does however have component and DVI and will take any input from them
Indeed I hooked a DVD player to it via DVI using an HDMI to DVI
( The DVD is an upscaling Samsung which has HDMI) and it played without any issues

but a camcorder HDMI directly to a PC monitor .. Im not really so sure

I say this because i couldnt get the DVD player with its HDMI to DVI output to play on another Sony monitor 1280 x1024 max resolution to play :it said the resolution from the DVD player was not supported. I tried varying the resoluting without any luck and gave up

Cheers, Senu - I've pretty much reached the same conclusion too. Probably not worth buying an HDMI cable just to test a theory that's fairly tenuous to start with.

Still, if anyone has actually had success doing this, do tell.

Andrew.

HDMI and DVI are essentially the same except for audio and the way the plugs are laid out, there will be no problems

True,
But I could not get my DVD player with HDMI to DVI to play off the PC ,monitor, Was i unlucky? ..( see my post)
The question is whether a Normal PC monitor will readily output a camcorders hi def output, not so much the interface used
I did use another with success but that one is a PC monitor / HDTV

Re: HDMI to DVI - playing HD camera on LCD monitor

Right, so basically if it's not an HDTV as well as a monitor then sending HD up the DVI input isn't going to result in a picture.

I knew it was too simple to be true!

Still willing to be disabused of this conclusion, however.

Maybe not, all I did was share my experience with you

No harm in trying, since in effect, the only theoretical difference is the presence of a tuner and connections AFAIK
