Vegas Pro 8.0 - Firewall Detecting Questionable Events

Quick question.

I installed Vegas Pro 8.0 at the weekend. On running it for the first time, my Comodo firewall detected that vegas80.exe was trying to do the following:

Change protected registry keys
Gain direct access to the screen
Gain direct access to the HDD

Naturally I blocked this before I could find out whether this is normal. Needing to change some registry keys I can understand, as well as potentially needing direct access to the hard disk drive to burn footage. But why would it need direct access to the screen?

Any advice appreciated.

S.

Re: Sony Vegas Pro - Malware Question

The problem is not Sony Vegas Pros . It is Comodos IMHO

How can you be sure it isnt being overzealous with its reporting?

I have found ( personally) it very intrusive and capable of making one paranoid of running even simple programs

Even if it is right concerning the screen: if a program has overlay ( display) functions ( and is capable of allowing you use an external monitor ( or second monitor) it does seem plausible that needing to access the screen may be perfectly explainable and by blocking it you may be removing some functionality you may need

Re: Sony Vegas Pro - Malware Question

I use Comodo Firewall and dont have problems with it , but then again I have limited internet access on my editing PC's and dont use anti-virus or firewalls .In anycase whenever I install software I always run a registry checker and a program like spybot .I found Spysweeper by Webroot excellent for geting rid of things hidden in programs , but sadly I dont use that anymore .I would recommend using Wise Registry Cleaner , it's a freebie and scans for orphan files and files it thinks are suspicious . I too hate programs that need to run in the background [using resources] even when you are not actually running the program itself . I use Winpatrol to find and close them down .

Re: Sony Vegas Pro - Malware Question

Agree that "bloatware" is annoying. however if that access is needed for full functionality of the software program,, locking it may make it malfunction and simply not do what you want
Webroot Spysweeper is excellent but , even itself, like comodo will ask you if you are in charge or some rogue program is being sneaky
I would imagine that Sony Vegas is not the latter sort.. unless it is is from a torrent /P2P site where some "stuff" has been written into its exe

Re: Sony Vegas Pro - Malware Question

It's going to do some low level access to hardware to get decent performance.

If your copy is legitimate I wouldn't worry.

Re: Sony Vegas Pro - Malware Question

Cheers for the help guys.

Will have to bear in mind the torrent comment ;-)

Any ideas on why Vegas would need direct screen access?
