Thanks: Gave 2, Got 0 | Sony SR10 Or Canon HF100
I am looking to get a hd camcorder and spending about £550 after reading the forums i've narrowed it down to either the Sony SR10 of Canon HF100 but would like to know is one better than the other or are they about the same. All i would be using tha camcorder for is to record my kid growing up i know it will be down to personal choice but just wondered if anybody had any views
Thanks |

In terms of video quality, I think the HF100 has the edge. The HF100 and the SR11 are very similar in quality. The SR10 is good, but a small notch below the SR11 (and HF100).

Even camcorders that have a "progressive" mode deliver it in the interlaced format. It's not a problem. 1080i is the standard. Perhaps 1080p will be one day, but it isn't yet.

Another vote for the HF100 (i have the HF10).
My TV only goes up to 1080i but the footage from my HF10 compared to my older GS50 (DV) is astounding.
Im really only going to use it to film the kids growing up as well but as its so small i tend to keep it with my a lot of the time, even if i dont expect to use it.
I took my HF10 round to a mates house on Sunday and he has a full 1080P version of my TV and i really couldn't see a difference. We set both TV's up with the same settings, just to make sure everything else was even.
I think you should be able to get the HF100 for a little under your budget as well but of course you'll need to get a SD card or two.

I have been mighty impressed with the SR10 I have. It was an impulse buy but its turned out to be way more than what I need at the moment, I have it for sale in the classifieds if you want to have a look |

PSF is Progressive Segmented Frame, the end result is progressive.

I opted for the SR12 (about £700 after Sony's £50 cash back) as I feel the view finder is a must. Try looking at an LCD screen on a beach with direct overhead sunlight!
If you are going to spend over £500 then you my as well get something that will perform in all situations.
At least with the Sony SR12 you won't run out of memory! (Only battery power!)

how much more than the SR10 is the SR11? | Depends where you get it from; looking at typical online prices there is around a £200 difference. (You can get the SR10 for under £500; the SR11 tends to be £675-£700). With both you can get £50 cashback now.

funnily enough i am in the same boat. my daugher is 11 weeks old now and she is growing so fast that i really gotta by a camcorder now and not wait till something better comes along or prices drop. only problem is i want an HD cam with a viewfinder and the SR11 is about 100-200 quid above my budget, which was supposed to be 450, certainly no more than 550
i just don't see how i could live without a viewfinder if i wanna record in the sun

Looks like you need to make the jump to the SR12 if you want a view finder of try to find the SR11 for a price better than the £700 for the SR12E after cash back.
