What Are All These Files?

My Camera is A Panasonic SDR-H60 And when I download I get many files/folders IE.... DCIM, SD_VIDEO, and CAMCNINF DAT FILE, With only the SD_VIDEO containing anything IE......MGR INFO, PRIVATE, and PRG001
On opening it reveals PRG001 + MOI FILES again only the PRG001 contains anything. So is it ok to delete all the other files because out of about seven files the video clips are only in one.So what are all the others about??......Pete.

Re: What Are All These Files?

It's where the Government files are kept. They record when you use your camcorder, for how long, what you film and then this information is used to calculate how much Camcorder Tax you owe on an annual basis.

DCIM stands for Digital Camcorder Instant Messaging and is the mechanism by which the information is sent to the Tax authorities.

I heard they were thinking about using passports to store all this information, but apparently they've done a u-turn on this policy this week.

Re: What Are All These Files?

That's right. That information is held in the PRG001 folder, standing for PASSPORT REGIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and 001 being the country code for UK (having invented the system (a bit like Postage Stamps)).

The folder marked PRIVATE is where all your biometric data is held - it's downloaded from your PC the first time you connect via USB.

I knew there was a reason I went Mac. And never went back.

To Shezza -

I suppose you've gathered by now that nobody really knows (assuming Rhu & I account for everybody and if we don't know then nobody knows, neither of which is true, obviously, so you could still be in luck).

I am, however, inspired by the title of this thread, as well as by a somewhat off-putting experience I had walking into the kitchen after dinner this evening, to start another thread. It will bear the title "What are all these flies?"

I am,
Yours, etc.,
Andrew.

Well, DCIM is the directory that your digital stills are stored in. The rest of the folders are more or less redundant, except the PRG001 which as you say has your video files in it. You may also get PRG002 and PRG003 & c.

But at the end of the day, does it matter as long as you can find your video files?

ROTFL!
I don't normally like LOLs, but in this case Andrew that definitely deserves a ROTFL.

p.s. I didn't know there was an entomology forum on here.

My only concern would be if you wanted to write the video back to the camcorder for some reason (assuming you can do that with this model), there's a chance that might not work if you delete the other files.

Don't delete the seemingly superfluous directory structure from the camera's harddrive if you want the files to play in the camera. I tried renaming a file on an SD card from a Panasonic SD5 and once it went back in the camera it detected the change and deleted not the file itself but the table of contents information for the file - making that file invisible to the camera (though it could still be dragged and dropped using a card reader).

Bottom line is I'd be careful.

Andrew.
