Streaming or Something Else?

I have noticed this in another thread, so i am going to ellaborate a little on it, and see what you guys reckon is the best thing to do.

My setup:

Panny SD1
Xl201 media centre PC w/card reader
Sony PS3 40GB
AV reciever with 5.1 etc

Basically when i try and play back the raw avchd files from the memory card, the PC doesnt like it, and plays it in a small window and really juttery. (i use KM player)

The PS3 doesnt have the card reader option so i cant just plug it in to the PS3.

Now the PC and PS3 are bothe connected via optical to the av reciever for sound and HDMI for video. My AV reciever does not transit Dolby etc through the HDMI.

I want to be able to play back the raw files somehow so they are top quality including the 5.1 sound.

Is it best to buy a card reader for the PS3. (will that work)?
Can i stream it via TVersity to the PS3?
Is there a way i can get them to play back on my PC properly?

This is more a consensous of what other people do to get it to work.

Your help is appreciated guys.

Thanks, Ben

Re: Streaming or Something Else?

Hi.
I cant help with your specific camcorder but i can tell you with the files my HF10 gives me (AVCHD) i can stream them from my PC to my PS3 via Tversity, to my PCH via MyiHome and even put them on a memory stick and put that in to my PS3.

On my PC i tend to use media Player Classic with the CoreAVC codec and the files play fine. MPC is free and CoreAVC is about £17 but there are alternatives to this.

Is this just a simple case of adding the storage folder to the tversity directory?

This sounds like a good idea to be honest. Can i just get a basic HDSC reader?

Thanks

Ben

Yes, with Tversity you just add the folder on your PC that has the files in it and then you navigate to that folder on the PS3.

I cant say for sure about a card reader, ill check mine tonight but i have a cheap 8GB USB2 memory stick that works perfectly, even for the HD stuff.
I do have a USB2 - SDHC adaptor that also works so i cant see why a card reader wouldn't work.

Re: Streaming or Something Else?

Dave .why MPC?
Is the current version no good? I certainly couldnt play AVCHD files on it even though I installed core AVC pro
FF player was able to use the codec though.. on a P4 3.0Ghz!

I guess its just that i prefer to use the smaller apps and MPC is a bit more configurable and less bloated.

Ive just tried using WMP11 and noticed a de-interlacing issue. Nothing that im sure i cant sort out but MPC is quicker to open and i guess , uses less resources.

Did you set MPC to not use any of the internal codecs and set coreAVC to be the preferred one? (im guessing you know all this anyway).
I can play these files on an old P4 2.4 ( i think) with MPC but i have to just let it play. If i pause it of try and scan to another part of the file it then refuses to play (needing a Ctrl+Shift+Esc to quit it).

Re: Streaming or Something Else?

Thanks I didnt use MPC .. I've removed it but can easily get it back and give it a go
FF player does play them with the Core AVC codec though
The Current WMP is really bloat ware
Now if only VLC would find the Core AVC codec..

Re: Streaming or Something Else?

I always thought VLC could play these files but ive had no joy either.
Not tried FF player but as VLC and MPC will, together, play everything i need im sticking with them.

Re: Streaming or Something Else?

I previously tried the trial version of the CoreAVC codec and it didn't work for me either so I don't think it's just you Senu

VLC (latest version) crashes when I try and play AVCHD files but I always thought that was because my PC couldn't cope.

Will give MPC a go too...

On my PC here at work i just have the internal audio filter enabled.
At home i tend to use AC3Filter within MPC but that was before getting my PS3 and PCH so im not sure how its set up now. Used to work fine hooked up to my Amp via coax.

One thing you need to make sure is that CoreAVc is actually being used by the file and not some other codec.
Ive always had good quality output from CoveAVC.

Cheers
Ive had another go and actually got MPC and FF player to use the core avc pro and I now have audio
I had to deselect all other codecs to force it to use core avc
On a P4 , 3.0Ghz in full scree mode..and if doesnt break up ( anymore) it did at first
Its certainly not showing as fluidly as HDV but It isnt too far off
I have 40Gb worth of stuff from the HG 10 which I enjoy messing with

Nice one.
Also dont forget to select prefered decoder in the CoreAVC control pannel.
