PS3 playback - fan noise

Hello all,

I know a good chunk of people here play back their recordings on their PS3.

I am looking at buy one to store and play my Sony TG3 files. But bit put off by some gamers saying the fan noise is really annoying. I was hoping it was silent for films.

Do any of you notice the fan noise when playing back HD or even SD files on the PS3? How about blue ray discs or SD DVD's?

I've asked here because i wont be using it for gaming, maybe gaming is more intensive than watching films and cam recordings.

Thanks,

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

hi,
i'm really pleased with my PS3, i have the 40GB PAL version which i understand has a CPU die shrink and as a result it's cooler. The downside is that it lost the SD card slots, it only has 2 USB 2.0 connections. So you have to either connect the camera straight to the TV, stream thru TVersity or copy the material onto a (16GB?) USB stick.

But it's quiet, really

I have the 60gb with the card readers which i soley use for BD and mine too is quiet when watching a BD. I will also use it now for my camcorder when i get the TG3 after your review.

Just a quick off topic but i read that you are going to stick with 4gb cards so you can burn directly to DVD how are you planning to do this, PC?

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

I had a 60gb PS3 and recently sold it and bought a Panasonic BD30. The fan was just so annoying, becoming very loud on Blu Ray's and Sd-Dvd's. I must admit, i am so glad i switched, the BD30 is completely silent and is great at playing back avchd footage either on sd-card or dvd.

The PS3 fan noise is not present on all . I have regular use of 2 60Gb ones which are quiet too

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

I've got a 40Gb PAL model and its silent. I've only heard the fans once and that was because I forgot to turn it off and it had been on all day in a warm house but thats it. Not like the 360 which gives my vacuum cleaner a run for its money in the noise stakes!

Playing back M2T files on the PS3 is whisper quiet as well.

Get one, the best purchase I've made in a long while (alongside the TG3 of course!)

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

I've got a 60GB PS3 which I use to watch the footage from my HF100.

Yes, the fans come on and yes they can become quite loud but I'm used to it now and they're not loud enough to cause me problems when watching.

I just turn the volume up a touch!

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

I have to say that i have never really noticed the fan noise on my PS3.

If however you decide to stick your hand behind it whilst it is on, you will notice that it kicks out a serious amount of heat.

So, i would say no. Fan noise isnt a problem.

However a HD-DVD unit attached to a xbox 360 is amazingly noisy! so never buy one of those!

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

i have an 80gb ps3 and the fan kicks in after about 10 minutes no matter what i'm doing.i have it connected to an 850 watt surround system and i have to turn it up to 20 just to drown the sound of the fan out.sony say it is down to the weather but it also did it when it was cold.i have tried it lieing down and on its side but no difference.you expect to be able to watch a blu ray at night with low volume seeing as that is what they are made for.i'm thinking of getting rid of it as i can live without games but not without hd movies.sony also say that, even though they make the product and install the fan,it is not covered in the warranty.is it just me or does that sound like a pile of crap?

Re: PS3 playback - fan noise

I Have the pal 40Gb version and for the first 12months never heard the fan during HD or SD movie playback. now it comes on after 10mins so loud that it ruins what i'm watching. I'm going to take it apart and hope it's just full of dust, if not, i'll be getting rid!

it seems to do worse for fan noise during movie playback than it does during games!
