Re: AVCHD or tape for quality play back on HD camcorder

Assuming some variables that you don't provide, such as price, I think the short answer is "no." Certain AVCHD cameras (e.g. Sony SR11 / SR12) are about as good in image terms as similarly-priced HDV cameras (e.g. Canon HV30, Sony HC9).

To clarify, AVCHD can be recorded to flash memory (Canon HF10, Panasonic SD9 / SD100) or harddrive (Sony SR11 / 12).

But to reinterate: there is no "clear winner." The "best" camera is a subjective choice which one would normally arrive at by plugging in variables such as price and features into a complex algorithm which calculates relative value for money.

Andrew.

In short you are comparing AVCHD ( HDD or SD card) to HDV (tape) for video quality in consumer camcorders
There is as stated above , no clear winner and youhave to be comparing like for like to have a valid comparison
Even with the top Sony models , Sony has equipped the SR 10- 12 with better imaging technology ( Sensor image processor) than the (HDV) HC9 making a direct comparison comparable mainly on price
What is happening at the Semi Pro /PRO level is that Panasonic is pushing AVCHD whilst other brands are using other formats to record to thier non tape high end kit
In short if you are considering a Hi Def consumer model, at the same price point AVCHD vs HDV are comparable for quality . AVCHD however is "the way" foward but if you do have tapes already , HDV is by no means a poor second choice ( Chrishull 3 is certain to disagree with this ..)

You little but i aint sure what i will disagree with,my new adition just gives pictures i like i am not sure it has quite the sharpness of my FX-7 but tests have proved that one to give the sharpest consumer picture, more than the canon A1 ETC.But i like the colours better and although i have always been one for prosumer on cam control machines it is nice to go out and not be stared at so much
