Re: 1080 Camcorder

Canon have 2 new models out, at least in Japan.

http://gizmodo.com/5027604/canon-upd...-hg21-versions

New Canon HF11 - 64GB and 24 Mbps capturing!

HF11

These are the first consumer camcorders that come with 24mbps bitrate, which is the highest the AVCHD standard supports afaik.

Re: 1080 Camcorder

Also, Panasonic HDC-SD9 / HDC-SD100 all record 1920x1080 to flash memory cards; Panasonic HDC-HS9 / HDC-HS100 record 1920x1080 to internal harddrive. You mention 1080p in your post. All of these models offer a progressive video mode as well as the standard 1080i.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sony's cameras (see post above) do not have an option for shooting progressive video, unlike the offerings from Panasonic and Canon.

Andrew.

They shoot 1920x 1080 but then record to internal HDD as 1440 x 1080. If you captured via HDMI you would get 1080p
I personally think 1080p is overrated in camcorders and indeed overall at the consumer level.
Apart from some games and most BD discs , Most "full HD " HDTV owners will get 720p or 1080i from Sky HD / BBC HD ect for the fore seeable future and are perfectly happy with it !;! pixel mapping may seem desirable but Most HDTVs deinterlace and scale up pretty well AFAIK
Besides given that Pro quality HDV camcorders ( costing thousand of pounds) do 1080i , it would suggest 1080p may not not be the very last word in HD image quality in the way we are led to believe it is by the "full HD " marketing brigade

Re: 1080 Camcorder

It does not have to be 1080P to put on blue ray i have all my 1080I hdv material on blue ray now and even some sr12 1920 footage converted to hdv[its all i can do with it as far as editing it goes for now]as well.

No reason at all,
My point was that there is more to quality in Hi def camcorder in the consumer world than 1080p output just as there is more to DSLRs than no of megapixels( to use analogy)

Although the recording isnt actually BluRay it is Hi def
For those who don't have a PS3 now and wont be burning to BD yet in 1080p , ( until media and burners come down in price)
It may be a bit limiting to dismiss anything which is not 1080p only ;ie All current Sony models and some Canons too

Editing is still not totally sorted yet too

£125 gets the Pana VW-BN1 Blu Ray Burner, or you can just hit it, with a Sony Vaio 500 gig Cheese shaped PC with Blu Ray burner

Re: 1080 Camcorder

How much is the media per disc.. ? 25Gb £10? a lot less VFM compared to DVD ATM and limited to your home use

TBH I dont think it cost that much, and do have a PS3 but in the wider world out there I reckon there are far more folk with 1080i HDV and AVCHD camcorders than will ever get to buy and use a BD burner for the foreseeable future , so wanting a 1080 p camcorder is fine, but not at all considering any non 1080p models is really limiting yourself and getting carried away by the full HD marketing thing
I would not avoid getting a 1080p model if it just happened to be the best my money could get but owning some 1080i models as I do,( and seeing how good they are on a 1080p HDTV), in addition to having used some high end camcorders, I more sold on the specific qualities of the individual camcorder rather than the promise of technology which may be limited to the label on the kit
I don't know Sony's Reasons for1080i but there is no denying that they make excellent camcorders as does Canon
So I'm all for technology but I smiled wryly reading the "Best of Stuff " this evening..Sure 1080p will probably get to be standard as will higher AVCHD encoding bitrates but that is not the case now

Re: 1080 Camcorder

I had an SD9 and thought that the 1080 x 25p was stunningly unspectacular.

I almost managed to catch the delivery driver on his way out of the building...

Re: 1080 Camcorder

As a newbie to Hi def recording, I hope you will be able to offer me some advice.
I have recently purchased a Sony HDR-SR12E camcorder which offers HD at both 1920x1080 and 1440x1080.

I have played footage back recorded in both settings on my Toshiba DLP TV using the component connection and I cannot see any difference.

I'm tempted to stick with the lower setting as it gives nearly twice the storage but I'm concerned that when i eventually get a suitable PC to edit the footage I might then see a significant difference in the final result.

Additionally I don't understand how the 1440x1080 format fits a Hi Def Widescreen TV correctly as those proportions aren't widescreen 16:9

Can you advise please.

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: 1080 Camcorder

I’m not surprised you can’t see the difference. The difference in horizontal resolution is hard to see; which is why until recently 1440x1080 was the standard format used (and still is the only recording option for HDV camcorders). If you edit it, it won’t degrade any more than 1920x1080 will (which again should not be noticeable, if you are doing a single generation render).

It fits your screen using non-square pixels, which are rescaled.

Re: 1080 Camcorder

Thanks for the response.

Because I don't know when I'll be getting suitable editing PC / Software for HD editing I'll stick to the 1440 setting as it gives a lot more storage.

Perhaps I'll see a slight difference if I connect with a HDMI cable from the camcorder instead of component but assuming it won't be any worse than what I'm seeing with component I'm more than happy with the quality I'm seeing.

Re: 1080 Camcorder

It sounds as though you're going to keep all your footage on the camcorder's HDD, if so, you might want to think about "off-loading" your footage now and again
- you never know what might happen to the camcorder's HDD or the camcorder (eg my Dad left his up a mountain ! !)
In which case you could probably leave it in 1920x1080 - it should give you 15 hours worth . . .
