Memory Sticks

I read that the memory sticks use the FAT file system

FAT is restricted by 4gb max file sizes.

If it really is FAT formatted does that mean you can't record any clips longer than 4gb on HD camcorders like the Sony TG3?

thanks

Re: Memory Sticks

The Sony TG3 will take memory sticks over 4G in size, but at the highest quality you get 25 mins on a 4G stick, and you can load a new stick in just a few seconds, so in practice, it's not a problem.
I dump to hard drive all footage, back it up on a second hard drive, and re-use the memory sticks. The 4G versions are usually the cheapest per Gigabyte, as well.
Works for me..

Re: Memory Sticks

Thanks both - that makes sense; was wondering about long recordings and 16gb cards.

Well i used the cam for the first time tonight - only a few clips.

I can see us filling up a 4gb fast. Although i ordered another card i think i may need a 3rd for a week away holiday.

How much storage is "enough" for someone who likes to film short clips over say a week away. E.g. if you go away how many hours would you typically video?

Re: Memory Sticks

I guess you would need several sticks if you can't archive to a hard drive while you are on holiday. Don't forget also, you might need a spare battery as well, if you haven't got access to a charging point. I always carry one myself for the TG3.
The software supplied allows you to create AVCHD discs very quickly and easily from the footage, for playing on a BD player or PS3, which will free up the memory stick capacity, if needed.

Re: Memory Sticks

Thanks JH4 - i think i will need more.

I'm going away for a week with the mrs and i will see how i get on with 2 4gb sticks.

I thought i can always stick it in easy mode and although a step down in quality you get a lot more recording time and the PQ isn't that different.

Also i like the idea of 4gb sticks i could completely dump the whole card to DVD-R and the mrs can do it without having to think. But i doubt we will be taking a storage device or laptop abroad. So depending on my week away, i will prob end up getting another 4gb and a spare batt as you suggested

Re: Memory Sticks

The only thing I would add to that is - I always record in best quality.
It is something you might always regret at a later date if you don't do this, especially if you get really good footage. It's better to lay out the money first to have the right hardware to hand, so that you are able to do this.
Just my thoughts, of course.
Have a great hol !
