Amazon

They may not always be the least expensive crowd around, but you can't go wrong with Amazon. Free delivery. Excellent returns policy. If there's only 20 quid in it, between them and the others, I know who I'd go for.

Andrew.

Re: Amazon

I agree with Andrew, I would happily place an order for that much money with Amazon (not a marketplace seller). It is most certainly worth spending extra to get that extra piece of mind rather than trying just to get the best deal.

I've never heard of bestbricedbrands (does not mean they are no good) but I can't find a phone number or an address on their website, for that reason I personally would avoid like the plague, but I'm not going to tell you what to do. I've heard of lucmos and their website only has a voicemail number (as well as webchat), the website is a bit shoddy which always puts me off.

On the whole I would stick with the big boys that have a reputation to lose and a good rep for customer service ie. amazon, play, empiredirect etc. Some people around here would avoid the likes of dixons but I've always had good service and their prices are sometimes good with discounts. I would avoid pixmania.co.uk as I hear their CS is poor and they don't always supply a UK model for certain products like TVs (not sure if this applies to camcorders).

This place supply a 'free' 2-year warranty with the HF10: http://www.equipmentexpress.co.uk/ I've not used them but I've contacted them via phone & email in the past and they seemed ok (they are essentially a camera shop).

Always read the returns policy. Make sure the website does not deal in grey imports unless you are happy with that.

Well, there isn't on my HF100 (which will share the same focus system, lens etc. as the HF10).

If you have links, I would love to read them, out of curiosity. I've never seen this mentioned on expert reviews (I read both HF10 and HF100 reviews) but of course I haven't read every single owner review.

I do know what you mean, and I think it's a natural tendency to talk about the negatives and this comes out more online. However, I will break the mould and say I think my HF100 is fantastic!! I look forward to using it every time. I chuckle to myself every time I watch the footage on my HD TV because I'm amazed how sharp it is. I see no reason why the HF10 would be any different and you have the internal memory to play with as well. Do you have the chance to see/hold either camera in a shop?

No. Both these models have accurate and fast auto-focus.

It will be slower in low light, but that is the same for any camcorder.

Search enough and you'll find someone saying something negative about any model.

Re: best place to buy camcorder for price and service

i have not found the canon hf10 or hf100 in any shop

i have found the sony thou and tested on my ps3, it did struggling when panning comet, but colours where great and so was the sharpness

i cant complain with the sony but the Cannon seems to review witht he edge,

and lets face it if i was buying a slr camera i would not buy sony it would be canon so the lens must be better.

also i quess it is really silly not to buyt he hf100 when all you are buying is £24 of memory,

if you record on the hf10 an d the memory runs out will out go striaght to card?

and does the picture like the panny and sony capture to card whilst recording to hard drive, if the answer is no the the HF100 is the better buy i quess

I don't think you can make that conclusion. We are talking about video here; Sony makes professional broadcast cameras and lenses, some of which cost 10s of thousands of pounds.

I have no issue with you chosing the Canon - it and the SR11 are equally good. But I don't believe the Canon lens is better.

I agree with Mark there that comparison is not valid and potentially misleading
I have Canon DSLRs but have used Sony A100 and was quite impressed

With DSLRs Sony bought over the highly respectable Konika Minolta
brand and have improved it
Also to use your analogy by extension, Nikon make awesome Cameras (DSLRs) , but if they entered the Camcorder market today they would need to prove themselves
Panasonic, ( which also make great camcorders ), have decent non DSLRs cameras but not a single DSLR to date
