I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio on trial and it seems to have all the bells & whistles I could ever need for editing but as a newbie I am really stuck on how to edit properly. Is there a very easy newbie "how to" guide anywhere. Even the "help" part has not helped me.
thanks

thanks | Im surprised that the excellent "show me how "tutorials aren't helpful
You could try http://www.vasst.com/
But You tube has a large no of tutorials as
Does Sonys website Here I have them on a homemade DVD for offline use ( if you wish)
Because the MS and full versions have a similar GUI they are helpful even if not specific
Other wise redsox_mark is longer time experienced user here ( Guru infact)and will no doubt help as your questions come
I agree it has a learning curve and I even have a book or 2 as I had to teach its use but
In addition to these there are DVD tutorials

Thank you for the suggestions - it's probably me as a newbie to editing that is the problem rather than anything else. I can just about cope with Win Movie Maker...
Help would be appreciated with editing in the middle of a movie. I have just about got the hang of cutting out either the start or the end but am still stuck on taking frames out of the middle.
Thanks again

There are different ways. The way I do it is in the timeline, get to the point where you want to start the cut and press "s" (split). Then move to the end point and press "s" again. You now have a separate event for the bit you want to cut, you can delete this. If you turn "ripple edits" on, it will automatically move the clips around to fill the gap.

Aye, this is good. Personally, I let the assembled clips run in real time, then where I want the split, I hit the S key. Then if you hit the DEL key in quick succession the right hand, downstream portion of the clip will be deleted, all in real time. So you can quickly go through all your footage, watch it and edit it as you review it.
If you let the begining and the end of clips overlap - you get a transition (there is a setting to have different wipes, but I think the default is a blend)
Those tutorials in the help section ARE excellent

Thanks very much for the help. I was really stuck on that. It's not to difficult - once you know how... So while I experiement with straight forward editing perhaps you could tell me if vegas can do any really fun stuff - like picture in picture or such like and I would also be interested to know if it can do screen credits on the movie background rather than just a coloured background. I have already found out you can add stills to the movie. I know I am probably jumping before I can walk...
Thanks again

Yes, you can do "picture in picture". You can have 4 video tracks; you can overlay one over the other, have them move around etc. The features you need to use for this are "track motion", or "event pan/crop".
And yes, the credit roll can be played over the the video. You can also easily combine this with using multiple tracks, e.g. to show "outtakes" etc in a small window as the credits roll.

Thanks again | Picture in Picture is easily possible: It involves using ;layered video tracks
if you play a video track on top of another the topmost one shows, , so you do that but resize the top video to make it smaller and also position it were you would like it to show over the lower video
Much Simpler to do than the explanation sounds TBH
:The "show me how" tutorials have a " how to scale crop rotate video" under the video and still image tutorials
For transparent credits,
If you go to the media generators tab chose credit roll, and select scrolling on transparent
Saying that, you can adjust the transparency of any video or generated media even the solid colours
You can have a play and discover these things on the linked tutorial ect
There is no getting past learning it..

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. I have managed to copy a slice of footage but am stuck on how to make it smaller before layering over the original tracks. Also could not find the Tutorials mentioned on resizing.
Cheers

Use "Track Motion". Look it up in the manual.
