Panasonic HDC-SD5 Advice

Is the Panasonic HDC-SD5 a good Camcorder to use in low light situations and is a good overall camcorder for everyday use?

Yes, it is a "good overall" camera. It will do its best to give you pictures in low light but this means bumping up the gain and making the picture pretty noisy - but on par with all cameras around this price point.

Yes, the SD5 (which is discontinued) is good value at the price you can get it for today £350), but low light performance is not a strength.

Can you recommend a camcorder that has good light capabilities?

At that budget none will be great in low light. A decent standard def model will be better in low light (but with less resolution, not as good in good light on a HDTV) e.g. Panasonic GS330.

The discontinued Sony HC96 was the last model in this budget which had really decent low light performance.
