Software/Canon HF100 help please.

Having deliberated for a fair while, I've now ordered a Canon HF100.

The next step, is to figure out how to watch back the footage that I record. I have an HD TV, but no other playback options such as a PS3 or Blu-Ray player.

The cost of either of these is a little prohibitive at the moment, so I have decided to always record in the highest quality, store these HD quality files for future editing, but to just burn Standard Definition versions of the footage onto standard DVDs for immediate use.

My question is, what will be required to burn Standard Definition DVDs from the HD footage? Will the software that comes with the camcorder already do this, or do I need to buy some additional software?

Presumably, any reasonable computer will then be able to edit this footage, rather than requiring a top-end PC as seems to be required by HD footage?

Once the cost of Blu-Ray comes down to a more affordable level, I'll then look at creating HD versions of the footage from my archived versions. Does this sound a sensible enough option?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

How are you going to archive them?
On hard drive? If yes, then you should know that they will be huge. I think 8GB for 1 hour @ highest quality.

Re: Software/Canon HF100 help please.

Was going to buy a 1TB external drive. Should allow me to keep just over 100 hours.

Bad idea?

Is anyone able to answer this part of my original question? Would like to order the software soon if any is required, to make sure its here in time.

Thanks,

Tony

In order to play and easily edit AVCHD footage you will need a PC with a core2duo and 1Gb of RAM
Regarding software
The Corel UleadMF5Se comes with the Canon HG 10 . I dont know what comes with the HF100 but that can turn it into SD DVDs. Its editing abilities are very scant though
UleadMF6+ ( full version) can do a better
Nero 8 (Nero vision4 ) can also do it
but
A P4 3.0Gzh PC ( such as Im using now will struggle a lot)
UleadVS 11.5 is worth looking at

I hesitate to recommend Pinnacle Studio 12. Ver 11 was quite stable but the ( newly released) ver 12 seems to be having teething problems
Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8 is also getting mixed reviews with footage from non Sony camcorders
Part the problem being that the AVCHD codec seems to be more of a guide than a standard with each camcorder manufacturer having sub varieties
