Please offer advice regarding new Sony camcorder

Hi

I am looking to replace an old Sony Mini DV with one of the newer HDD camcorders.

Is there any drawback to not having a firewire connection ie only USB 2.0?

Is it as easy as transferring the the data from the HDD to my laptop and then burning it to DVD+RW or do i have to authorise (which i read about in a different thread) the DVD's? I ask this as i want to be able to play these DVD's in any DVD player.

Also, can i edit the movies with for example Photoshop Premier Elements software (bundled with the laptop) as my computer also came with DVD gate Plus but i think this is only for Mini DV.

Any help would be appreciated as i am a little confused.

Many thanks

No disadvantage as you are just copying raw data from one device to another. There is no loss of quality with this type of transfer.

For a DVD to be playable in a standard DVD player then you do need to author the disc rather than just copy the files onto it.

I'm not too sure if Adobe Premiere Elements can handle AVCHD files (this is the format from Sony HDD camcorders), but I'm sure somebody else who uses it will be able to confirm if it can or not.

Mark.

Adobe Premiere Elements (current version 4) does not support AVCHD.

That is correct
it was advertised as such but doesn't do it
But it certainly supports the SD output (mpeg2) from the HDD camcorders

Dont post yet one more thread on Sonys HDD compatible software without checking out the existing threads
All software which support AVCHD support Sonys version.. a few have issues with Panasonics, or Canons unless patched with the latest updates
Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8 supports Sonys 1080p but not Panasonics
