Canon or Sony ? HD me up !

Hi there,

I am thinking of ditching my old Panasonic sd5 camera (one of the early SD digitals) and moving up to HD.

I don't want to use tape any more and would prefer the convenience of card memory or Hard Drives. I have narrowed my choice (based on reading umpteen pages on the internet ) to the Canon HF10 or Sony SR11.

Which one would people recommend based on the following criteria, scoring each between 1 to 5:

1) Ease of Use
2) Overall picture quality
3) Fast panning picture quality (e.g. sport)
4) Low Light performance (i.e. indoors)
5) Size and weight
6) No score here: Which one would you buy - HF10 or SR11 ?

I am really interested in your help and feedback here.

Thanks all

I'd say wait until September and get the Panasonic HDC-SD100.

"I'd say wait until September and get the Panasonic HDC-SD100"

Hi there.

Why would you recommend the HDC-SD100 over the Canon HF10 or H100?

Is it likely to be less expensive? If not, then what will the benefits be, and does this camera retain the low level light issues that I have read about in relation to the Panasonic HDC HS9 and its small triple CCDs?

I too am thinking of buying the canon - the HF100 in my case because I quite like the silver colour and I don't really need the internal 16 Gb memory.

It has a cam control ring for focus, etc. It takes SDHC cards. It has a viewfinder! It has a revolutionary new 3MOS which is reckoned to be twice as sensitive to light as the CCD it replaces.

Details are a bit sketchy so far but what there is can be read here:

I thought it sufficiently exciting to put my camcorder buying plans on hold.

Why the HF10 over the HF100? It's much easier to whip the memory card out of the camcorder and put it in a card reader to transfer the contents to a computer than to plug the HF10 into the mains adapter and then plug the HF10 into the computer, and then if you've recorded more than 16GB you've got to use a card reader as well anyway!

Mmmm, it does look good and the viewfinder would definitely be a bonus! Any idea what the price is likely to be?

Pity I am going on holiday on Sept 12 and would like to have my new camcorder by then.

Hey Webby, I thought it would be useful to have 16Gb in the Camcorder as a backup. I would mainly be using a memory card though.

I guess the questions is, will the SD100 be better than the HF10 or the SR11 ?

Even this year's Panny's sound great on paper, but in reality are not as good as teh Canon and the Sony - why would the SD100 be a Canon or Sony beater. It may just be better than the current Panny crop.

Its like Computer upgrades i suppose. Wait for the new stuff to come and and you end up never upgrading! Always waiting for the 'new' stuff!
