Firewire 400 External hard drive Enough for HDV editing?

I'm wondering if i can edit HDV videos with my laptop
However i do not have E.sata port (No express slot too)

Is firewire 400 external HD enough for 1440x1080i or 1280x720p video editing?
It seems everyone recommend SATA 7200RPM for editing but no one mention if fire wire 400 is enough for HDV editing

I have no plans to edit AVCHD or Full HD videos (1920x1080)

Also about my laptop its
Intel dual core 2 duo 2000
5400 RPM internal hard drive
Fire wire 400 7200RPM external hard drive
2GB DDR2 RAM
8400GS

or is it too weak for stable HDV editing?

Your PC should be fine, as well as using a Firewire 400 external HDD (or a USB2 external HDD). I use both with HDV, and with the same spec machine (except I only have 1 GB RAM). It also depends on the software (I use Sony Vegas).
