Unhappy Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

first post here, have searched forums for answer, but could not find one....

I captured an hour of so of .avi into a 10gb file using Roxio 9 (Panasonic camcorder via Firewire). I then went into Roxio Videowave to edit the clips and it was not possible to open the file, nor was it possible in Windows Movie Maker. If I capture in Mpeg2 then Videowave/WMM can edit files without problem. The actual file format was described by Roxio as DV AVI.

The only bit of information I could pick up from the Internet (but couldn't understand) was that there are type 1 and type 2 .avi file formats and I might need to convert between the two to be able to edit the file, which seems a bit odd.

Can someone please advise where I am going wrong. Roxio 9 is installed on a Win Vista system. Cheers Carl

Should also have said the captured .avi files play fine in win Media Player, so they aren't corrupt....

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

DV type 2 is the standard codec use by Windows and recognized by most Editors
DV type 1 is a non standard codec and not universal in Editors

You can download this free utility to view the codec properties and if the codec is installed on your system:
http://gspot.headbands.com/

Not famillar with Roxio but you could check your properties settings before you capture, it may be set to DV Type 1

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

Thanks glesgaguyav

The Roxio software describes the AVI capture format as "full-size DV video with optimal quality" - it just seems annoying that one part of the Roxio suite can capture video that another part of the suite (videowave) cannot edit.

I have downloaded Gspot before when I had a differnet issue with .mkv files, but couldn't make much sense of the information it gave me. What codec info am I looking for? I assume that if I can play the .avi file (which I can) I must have the right codec on my PC - i have installed the full version of the K-lite codec pack.

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

It does seem a bit akward as you say.
Do you have any settings in your capture program?
If you do, it's also wise to check the audio capture settings these can affect the captured file if it's an audio codec that the program won't recognize

Another alternative is to use a standalone capture program, there's plenty of them available as free downloads and will allow you to capture in different formats, have you tried the inbuilt capture program in Windows Movie Maker ?

The GSpot program gives the file type info in the "container" panel, should tell you whether it's Type1 or Type2 DV

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

Another thought

Some video editors default to NTSC 30fps, if your footage is PAL 25fps then the program may refuse to open it, once again check the settings in your video editor.

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

Wow, complicated stuff!!

OK, got my head around Gspot, it reports that the avi file is Type 1 AV at 25 fps.

The Roxio capture program says the settings 720x576, 25fps, Stereo, 48khz, 16 bit. (some of which is verified by Gspot) I have had a good old dig around, and basically there are no audio/video settings, it is fixed.

Senu, thanks for the link - had a look at WinDV and it looks just what I need, have just downloaded, am trying it now

The reason I did not use WMM for the capture is that it only offered me a capture of a single avi file or scene's but in wmv format. I was after scene detection and an avi file as I wanted higher quality - it half sounds like I know what I am talking about

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

Meh, boo-hoo. Win-DV works absolutely fine. Captured both type 1 and type 2 .avi files and neither of them will be edited in WMM for Roxio Videowave. I notice that in my system tray i get a 'haali media splitter' icon popping up there - don't remember that being there before.....

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

I am not famillar with Roxio, but my only other thought is, are you trying to open the files in the correct manner?
Video editors can use different commands, I.E. open file, import media etc. to open video files.
Some use "open file" as a command to open a saved file.
Does Roxio have any of these commands ?

It seems very strange that it won't recognize DV AVI files

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

Im really not sure why this is occuring
Just for the sake of experimenting, why not download a trial of Sony Vegas movie stusio or Ulead VS and se if they work
Im not that keen on Video wave anyway

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

I'm sure it has been improved, but my first editing experience was with an early version of Videowave (version 2 I think) which came bundled with my first DV camcorder, circa 2000. I had lots of problems with it; moved to Vegas and have been more or less happy since.

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

Soooooo then......

I downloaded the trial of Sony Vegas and bingo it was able to import my main 10gb type 1 .avi file. I did get a message saying "An audio proxy file is being built – working with some kinds of audio compression schemes can be slow…." Vegas then took a very long time to build these 2 files, 10 minutes plus. Is this normal?

I can now edit the content to my hearts content. Vegas certainly looks a lot more complicated than I was hoping for, but perhaps in the long run that would be good. In fact it looks like I can do almost anything I would desire

Thanks for suggesting vegas - so, does that provide any information as to why WMM and Roxio cannot work with the clips, other than they are pants!

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

I've not seen that, I guess it has to do with the type 1 file. The difference between type 1 and type 2 as I understand it (and that's not very much) relates to how the audio and video streams are handled. So I suspect Vegas can't process the type 1 directly, and it needs to create this audio proxy for that reason.

Re: Captured .avi file using Roxio 9, but cannot edit in Roxio Videowave

You could try capturing directly with Vegas and see what happens; I think then it may be Type 2 and not need the proxy step.
