Sony PMW-EX1

To avoid confusion with my other thread regarding the Panasonic HVX 201 I am starting this new thread. My wanderings through the internet and various helpful replies have brought me to the above camera.Would it still be considered portable enough for my travels using monopod/tripod and occasional handheld for snap shooting? In my previous thread I ended up leaning towards the Sony HVR-V1E,how do these two cameras compare in particular with my wants, i.e. quality, ruggedness, portability? I thank you again in advance for any replies, feel like I'm working my way through a confusing field of choices.Cheers,Neilmac.

its bigger so obviously less portable, footage should have the edge on the v1 but its pros and cons.
hear is some threads on this machine http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51

if i was getting a cam of this price and size i would prefer the z7 to the ex1 although it does not output 35 mpbs but thats me.

Re: Sony PMW-EX1

I think the V1 is lighter. The EX 1 seems a tad more rugged in build even though in dimension it is not a lot bigger ( It is taller)
In short the EX1 is a little less portable but its video is "to die for" as they say
The V1 is however by no means a poor relation
The differences boil down to the fact that HDV is considered a "step " below XDCAM in Hi def stakes and machines using the XDCAM are placed a step "above"
So they are really not directly comparable as the EX1 is aimed squarely at the Pro Market . Its Fujunon Lens is apparently better( a matter of degree )

Can I suggest you look at the Sony Z7? which features interchangable lenses and also records to Compact flash cards as well as HDV tape?
I think it can compare with the EX1 ( format aside)

PS:Just seen Chris suggested it as well
