Re: Sony HDR-SR11 - Editing

Not sure that you can transfer edited AVCHD files back to the camera.
Out of interest why would you want to?

Re: Sony HDR-SR11 - Editing

Although my computer software can handle HD my DVD Recorder cannot. Therefore it seems to me that my best course of action is to edit my video on my PC and download back to the camera in order to play HD on my TV since I do not have a blu ray player...

i am prety sure this is a limitation of non tape cams which cant capture to the pc edit and then output back to the cam .with non tape you have to edit and make dvds avchd or bd disks,to play back from the cam it must be what is origionaly recorded.when i get mine i hope to be able to record back on to my hdv cams as well but time will tell.

I have answered your query in another thread and asked you to state specifically what needs clarification
You cannot edit AVCHD files then return them to the camcorder for playback
The edited files are not identical to the raw ones and the camcorder will not recognise and play them
You asked what a PS3 was ,I told you it is a Sony playstation 3 which is a BDplayer as well as able to play AVCHD files as they are, edited and also when you create an AVCHD disc with software Such as Nero 8, Ulead CS 11.5, Ulead MF6 plus .. and lately Pinnacle Studio 12
There has been no response in those threads
I would seriously urge you to follow up on old threads to unravel some of this ( if it doesnt make sense) rather than ask elsewhere
It is hard to know how much is useful to you if one is unsure of what you already know
HTH

thats the advantage of using hdv, edited avchd can be put on tape as well as the hd discs

Meaning that the HDV tape models are designed to allow edited material to be recorded back to tape, and played back from the camcorder in a way that HDD models do not.
This is possibly because the AVCHD files which are output by software are not identical in codec to the ones natively generated by the camcorder
What Chris is saying here is that you can output AVCHD as HDV, and then return this to a suitable HDV camcorder for playback

It seems to me that the marketing of HDD camcorders assumes that the buyer knows all these things, or they dont feel it is any use saying more than the fact that they are very good tapeless kit ( which they are)

Even if you had limitless funds, the BD recording drives, and media are still a little steep in cost and know how isnt simply "burning the files to a BD disc"
As it happens even with "AVCHD discs.". apart from the PS3 , it seem only Sony BD players play them.. for now

Senu, it is unfair of you to expect people who are completely new to all of this to understand everything that is said first time around.
I like others who are new here am only trying to get as much information as possible and I am sorry if this gets up your nose.......

Im sorry if I sounded offended
I am not
What Im trying to do is to make it very simple for you to understand by trying not to assume too much. If I "sense" what you do know, then Ill take it from there
The opposite is to explain things in a way that may come across as patronising and that is a big as well
A lot of folk on here might wrongly assume they are getting across but instead confuse you even more
I would say.. use your camcorder, copy stuff to your PC and watch from the camcorder, (until you fill the HDD ) and learn about the PC stuff gently..It will come. By then all the stuff on the PC can be used
You can make ordinary DVDs in the meantime fairly easily but it would be a software thing and how quickly you learn to use it. All have a learning curve but mostly not that steep, depending on what you wish to do

Otherwise all this Hi def stuff is not that straightforward if you are new to the whole thing and Im a little peeved that people get sold these things and then have to struggle to playback the footage..
But Im sure it will all become clear fairly soon!

I don't think it gets up his nose at all, might get up mine
I like you am trying to get my head around this HD video editing game.
It's complicated, well is for me
I am very grateful for any info that I receive. There are some real whizzs on here and I'd be totally lost without them

Re: Sony HDR-SR11 - Editing

Sony Vegas Platinum 8 is a very good piece of software for Vista. Only Sony Blu-Ray players (including PS3) playback AVCHD files otherwise a regular DVD drive will burn SD which you can play in any DVD player. For Mac only iMoves 08 supports AVCHD and its very simply to use. I would not recommend retaining the video you have shot on the camcorder hard drive you will soon fill it up.

Sony Vegas Platinum is good but it does not output AVCHD, (not a big deal once you realise you can watch Hi def as mpeg2 1080i: (HDV) which it does output) and whilst you can make regular DVDs from it you cannot make "AVCHD discs"
Most people who use it ( and indeed Vegas Pro) also have UleadMF6+ to make AVCHD discs onto Normal DVD media
Do any Blu Ray players actually play AVCHD files? I know the Sony ones play "AVCHD discs".
The PS3 plays pretty much anything but it is not an "ordinary" Blu ray player in that sense . It plays AVCHD files in its "media Player mode" . There are other media players (Eg Popcornhour) which also play AVCHD files (apart from the PC)
The idea of leaving the video on the camcorders HDD was suggested as a means to play it back whilst getting to grips with how to use the PC to create playback media
In part because
Edited AVCHD cannot be returned to the camcorder
And Because
the OP would have no means of watching the video once off the camcorder
The Camcorder HDD is by no mean infinite and will eventually fill up preventing further recording ( or even fail ..so the advice was to copy off to PC , whilst still having it there for playback)

Re: Sony HDR-SR11 - Editing

well from today i own a sr12 it came too late to do much testing, but my initial impresion how anyone would want a smaller machine i dont know but thats me.the footage i recorded played through my ps3 was better than i expected cleaner and better colour footage than my hc1 or FX-7,no problems with pans they look fine,i must say these are only after an initial short test.not too keen on the cradle set up.i can play footage fine through the ps3 but i have not worked out how to play through the component output without black breaks between each clip, the manual is very poor in my opinion compared to my hdv cams, the manual does say there is an optional strap but where can they be purchased, has anyone bought one..anyway much more experimenting before any final verdicts.

regarding size if it was in a hc1 shell with that ones controls i would be in heaven.yes through the ps3 ie hdmi it looks realy good on the 43" tv but on my smaller 19" out of component there is breaks between each clip not on the cams own lcd,any way about to capture first test and see how it goes,[
i think now after capturing a bit my pc will need a bit of upgrading].
with my component splitter output from component fine.

Sure. "Catpure" involves simply copying files from the camcorder HDD to your PC/External HDD. Any PC can handle that. It's only when you are editing or playing the files that the PC speed becomes an issue.

Re: Sony HDR-SR11 - Editing

And Chris; if you want to edit now, there are software packages which convert to more editable HD formats (with no visable quality loss), e.g.

Re: Sony HDR-SR11 - Editing

You can do this with Nero Vision 4 as well,
Import AVCHD, export as more easily editable HDV (m2t files) without editing
Or simply import and edit then export as M2t for playback ease
I have done it a few times on a P4 3.0Ghz with small clips in reasonable time
The resultant HDV files are fine

The resultant HDV files are fine
i have vegas pro now and pinacle 12 on order so nero 4 is another option but when i do get around to editing i want the best quality for bd discs but if i can make small MM2T hdv files for now its another option.but storing footage for now will be my priority.most serious stuff will still be done with hdv for now.thanks

What they dont say is that AVCHD files trimmed cut (ect) by PMB but essentially untouched may be
But once you Edit in 3rd party software including Sony Vegas titles, the re-encoded AVCHD files will no longer be recognised.. or playable by the camcorder
