Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

The Sony SR11. Dont know if i have made the right choice or not lol but in the end i had to pick one. I was put off the TG3 by the memory sticks. Just too expensive for storage, lovely unit though. So i was then left with the HF10 and SR11. The HF10 was better for portability but when i held it, it didnt feel that ergonomic for me, whereas the Sony felt ace, albeit larger and heavier. That coupled with the 60Gb HDD swung it for me. I still think i should have gone with the others LOL

If it feels right for you, it is probably the right choice. All 3 perform well. The SR11 is heavier, feels more solid. To some this is an advantage; to others a disadvantage.

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

Why would you want to use the memory Stick for storage?

I have an SD7 that uses SDHC cards, and SDHC cards are very cheap by Memory Stick standards, but I wouldn't dream of using them for storage.

I use a pair of HDDs.

True; I assumed what was meant was that buying enough MS cards to give you the equivalent storage to the 60 GB of the SR11 will add cost. I.e. short term storage, not long term.

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

Yes, but you don't, do you? You buy a personal storage tank, like my Nexto Multi ND-2325 and bung a spare 2.5" PATA HDD into it. Then you download your footage to that when your memory card is full.

So, you have the 4GB card it came with, a spare 8GB card and the storage tank . Job sorted.

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

True... or maybe something inbetween. If you need to shoot long events (e.g. a school play), you might want several cards so you could keep shooting (if you don't have time to dump the clips).

I understood that the "baa baa woolly sheep" brigade had now decreed the filming of school plays verboten?

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

I've not seen/heard that. I know at my kids school, they sent letters home saying the play would be "filmed", and offering parents a chance to object. (Or maybe they had to "opt-in" I can't remember). They did make a rule that only the official videographer (myself) was allowed to shoot the video. And the video was approved by the school before being sold to parents.

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

Did you have to pixellate the heads of the ones whose parents objected?

Or maybe in this sad world in which many people seem to want to make us think we live it's not the heads they are bothered about.

At last ;-)

I also felt the HF10 was a bit awkward to use at first but then i realised i could use the buttons under the LCD for recording and zooming and that makes it easier to use for me

Never mind the nanny state, sounds more like another means for the local education authority to generate revenue.

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

Sorry to continue the off-topic (and now political aspect), but actually it was more that the LEA does not give the school the funds to put on such productions...

All the proceeds are kept in a separate fund, used to upgrade the facilities (i.e. a new sound system), and fund the cost of future productions. I has happy to help raise money for the school.

And that's not right either, is it?

What does HMG do with he stunning tax windfall it is making on petrol, and especially diesel?

Probably makes up the shortfall in fag tax..... 'cos everybody buys them in Spain.

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

This will be my only OT post here but wanted to tell you about what happened to me.

First off, I once got told to stop using my 70-200 f/4 IS at my son's school play. They didnt mind me using my black lens's though.

This was better. It might sound a bit stupid or mean but last year i was stopped from using my old GS50 at my eldest sons school play. I was only going to shoot my son's scene's but the video guy came over to me and said i had to stop, as it said on the form we filled in that we agreed to him being the only one.thing is, we didnt fill the form in. We even got the head over to confirm it so i said i didnt want my son filmed by anyone. tit for tat maybe but the video guy agreed to let me film any scene my son was in.
Best part was the battery had died during all this and i ended up having to pay for a copy anyway

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

OK, well what (in law) is the difference between you or anybody else filming at a school play and the CCTV that films everybody everywhere all the time?

Why cannot you do one and yet they can do whatever they like?

Re: Finally, I have picked a camcorder........

I guess the difference with CCTV is that it is there in "the interest of public safety", and limited people have access to the footage.

In my case the school saying no to parents doing their own video was not because of wanting to sell videos (I priced them so cheaply and they were so good everyone wanted one anyway! ) but because of some issues caused by a parent once shooting footage and using it against the school. But as the "video guy" I never told anyone to stop shooting....
