Problems editing MPEG in Adobe Premiere

Hi,

Don't know if anyone can help, but I've got a quick question on behalf of a friend who's trying to edit a bit of footage from a DVD (with permission) using Adobe Premiere 6.

After renaming the two VOB files as MPG, when he tries to import them into Premiere, it says: "Unable to open file. File recorded at unsupported rate. Rates supported: 11,22,32,44,48 kHz."

According to my Ulead, it just appears to be a bog standard MPEG2 DVD-PAL file, with a pretty high (9.3 Mbps?) video rate and Dolby AC3 audio @ 48kHz. It plays fine on his computer (in Windows Media Player etc), and he's also downloaded AC3filter in case that helped with the Dolby audio codec. I may just have to turn it into an AVI for him to put into Premiere, but any ideas for this, or to help next time round please?

Thanks!

Edit: just noticed ver. 6 is actually quite ancient - perhaps it can't edit MPEG2?...

Re: Problems editing MPEG in Adobe Premiere

Does Premiere 6 edit mpeg?
I wonder .
I think Mpeg editing support came with ver 6.5
IIRC Mpeg support with ver 6 was "rudimentary" , as such it was very choosy which mpeg files it would import for editing, if at all

I imagine that is the Problem TBH
It is about 4 generations old (2001/2002)

Re: Problems editing MPEG in Adobe Premiere

Thanks guys, I hadn't realised quite how ancient Premiere 6 was (fancy changing their numbering system so they're now on CS3! Not that Serif makes any more sense, when MoviePlus version 6 finally comes out, they were going to call it X2, but because it's been a long time coming are now apparently going to call it X3!!)

I've just converted the clips in Ulead (knew it was good for something! ), also downloaded virtualdub mpeg2, looks handy. And I'll just have to persuade him to get some dosh out and spend some money on software written at least in the last 5 years!! Thanks again.

Re: Problems editing MPEG in Adobe Premiere

Thanks. Yes, I see on Wikipedia (and why should I doubt such a respected tome?! ) the main releases of Adobe Premiere were: 6 (2001), 6.5 (2002, with DVD support), Pro 1 (2003, rewrite), Pro 1.5, Pro 2 (2006), Pro CS3 (2007).

Personally I'd try and persuade him over to Vegas - at least I'd have some clue what he was doing then! But I understand the Adobe forums are good too. At the very least I'll get him to get hold of Virtualdub mpeg2 &/or Ulead DVD Movie Factory in the meantime anyway.
