Mini DV External Lights

I am glad that my MVX25i has an acsessory shoe for external lights or external mics.

Do the external video lights suck up a lot of battery power and are they likely to be a lot brighter then the ones you normally get built into the cams?

Re: Mini DV External Lights

To produce a decent amount of light, they need a lot of power. The more powerful ones will have their own battery. Ones which run off of the main camcorder battery tend not to be so powerful, and will reduce your shooting time.

Re: Mini DV External Lights

I think the only video light that would fit that MVX25i is the Canon VL-3 and I believe that uses the power from the cam.

Re: Mini DV External Lights

Only a Canon one will run from the camcorder battery, but I think any light with a standard "cold shoe" will work. E.g. one of these

Re: Mini DV External Lights

It looks better and brighter then the canon VL-3.

Thanks redsox.

Even with the batteries inside the lights how long roughly do they last?

Re: Mini DV External Lights

Depends on the light and the battery used; I have that Sony light; 30 to 60 minutes depending on the battery.
