Canon HG10 or Sony HDR-SR10E

I currently have a JVC vhs-c camcorder so as you can see i am right up there with modern technology !!! I thought i had better join the 21st century and buy a new camcorder. I thought one the above sounds about right, i will want to copy all the video onto my computer then download onto a DVD..... will either of the above two be ok for this ??? I am really new to all this HD video and really only need a camcorder to tape the kids and have memories for the future, am i getting a camcorder beyond what i need with the above ?

far be it for me to put you off the models you mention but you need powerfull pcs even more so than hdv.if you get one of them and then make dvds the quality is not that much more than svhc but avchd on disc keeps the hd resolution and can be played in a ps3 if you have one.hdv is getting frowned on by many now but it is simpler to edit and the tapes can be kept as well as dvds if you make them from the footage as well.i do not know if standard mini dv would be right now for you now but technoligy is moving fast.what ever you decide good luck

Re: Canon HG10 or Sony HDR-SR10E

I agree, if you main goal is to make DVD videos (which play on any DVD player), which by definition need to be standard definition; you can do it with these camcorders (coverting in software), but it is harder (need fast PC and the right software). If you don't mind this, these are good models. As Chris said, HDV would be a bit easier, as you could downconvert in the camcorder, and keep those tapes until you are ready to handle high def material.

Thanks for that, i have been looking at standard def camcorders as well but really don't know what to do for the best. I will read up a bit more and try and make a decision, thanks again.
