Are High Def files too big for computer?

I have been advised by Sony that I could run into difficulties editting from a high def. camcorder as my computer is only average (2GB memory). Until this conversation, I was planning on buying a HD camcorder but this, obviously, could put me off. I run Pinnacle ultimate and I have found that hour long videos become very slow to edit once I add music etc.

File size isn't the problem; due to higher compression High Def files are no larger, and often smaller, than DV. 2 GB of memory is fine. What you do need to edit high def is a fast CPU (especially so for AVCHD).

You really do need a C2D processor to do much at all with AVCHD. Play it even, let alone edit it.

Hi def on tape ( HDV) is less resource demanding
If however you are after AVCHD it isnt just, RAM (2Gb isnt bad) or Processor ( C2D does seem to be the minimum as stated above) it simply needs a well sorted " modern" system ( which isnt always the sum of its own parts)
The performance of Pinnacle may reflect the rest of yor hard ware ( apart from RAM) or may be revealing of the need to make your system as it, is a lot more efficient and optimised for video
