help with me sony hdr sr10

Hi all i am a newbie to camcorders

I have just brought the above camcorder - hoping i made the right choice however having read the threads i am getting a bit worried seems to be a mixed bag of opinions am i right

Any way i have no idea about camcorders - however i have just recorded some footage in HD and transfer it to my computer and have played it through the PMB and avchd program.

I want to be able to back this up on to my external hard drive as only have a lap top but dont appear to be able to export it. When i look at the file in my computer it comes up a file name i do not recongnise. Can you help me do i need to convert it into SD before i can export it?

Also it appears that i can only copy the HD recording on to a disc which only plays blue ray is this correct because it uses avchd if so i dont have such a machine have i therefore made an error buying this camcorder as i want to be able to copy it on to disc.

Finally is it worth getting HDMI cable my lap top has an HDMI slot will it make transfering the files quicker obviously i can simply connect my Computer to my tv which is HD which will be good.

Thanks for any help you are able to give me any other tips you have would be great

P.s. what software programs support AVCHD as the software provided by sony is cr.p

you can make dvds avchd dvd and blue ray which is expensive and needs a blue ray burner with your cam.

Which files names?

No. they are m2ts files which can be moved by simple drag and drop. copy paste and do not need converting unless you want to make a "normal" SD DVD video

With the right software, you can make an "AVCHD disc" onto a normal DVD disc. This is readable by the PS3 and some Bluray players as if it were a Bluray.. but with maximum of 20-40 mins time
If you have software like PowerDVD Ultra , it will also play the disc in its BD player mode as if it was a BD disc
You can copy the HD files to anything as files though .. but they will be readable by PC and the PS3 as a media player

The HDMI on your laptop is MDMI out it is not for transfering files to the laptop it is for transferring video and audio to a TV..
As such you can view your files on a TV played off the laptop

It is easier to answer specific queries. I would search the forums under "AVCHD" many of your queries have been dealt with before

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8 ( and the full version)
Pinnacle Studio 11 plus
Ulead VS 11.5
Ulead Movie factory 6 plus
and
Imovie08 on the mac
Most of the programs have trial download versions.. you can try them

Re: help with me sony hdr sr10

Nero Vision 5 is one ( it is part of Nero 8)
You can import m2ts files into it and end up with a Normal SD DVD video
UleadMovie Factory6 plus ( or even 6) is another
Pinnacle Studio 11 ( will soon be repalced by 12) is yet another
Ulead VS 11.5
as well
Sony Vegas MS Platinum 8 as well
I now know though that SVMP8 does not import 1920x 1080 (1080p) Panasonic AVCHD files but as this is Sony that should be OK , Sony output as 1440 x1080

Otherwise all the above can be used to make DVD video ( SD) from AVCHD files
It is possible to use the SR 10 to shoot in SD as well
Pinnacle Studio 11 and SVMP8 do not ouput AVCHD ( although they can HDV ( mpeg2 1080i) ), this is not important if you only want to make SD DVD but to make "AVCHD discs" or even BD , they are not suitable on thier own
All the software have trail downloads and the only differences are ease of use
I would personally recomend UMF6+ for ease of use and features, or Nero Vison 5 for simplicity and ability

Re: help with me sony hdr sr10

The files are m2ts, in the stream folder
That they are not recognised is because there is no program they are registered to.. There is no native Windows support for this ( newer) file type and just selecting it will not bring "recognition"
Memory Stick duo is an expensive way to "back up", (I think)

When you install a program which can play them they will be "recognised"
Nero Vision 5
or a freebee
Oxygen

Thanks Senu for that Oxygen link. I've tried all sorts of players, codec packs etc and still had problems playing AVCHD clips; but that Oxygen player works great!

Re: help with me sony hdr sr10

Hi,

I just bought a Sony SR10... Great camera and no probs importing to Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 or iMovie. However, I just cannot switch this cam into SD mode... I have looked everywhere in the menu and I can switch between the various HD modes but SD is nowhere to be seen. I can't find it in the menu section that the owners manual states it is in!!!

Am I missing something? Can anyone help me please?

Thank you so much..

The SR10 uses USB to transfer video. You need to use the Log and Transfer tool instead of the Capture tool.

The Log & Capture interface has transport controls for playing, fast-forwarding, rewinding the tape, but as you're dealing with discrete video files recorded to hard drive of your SR10, there are no transport controls as such in the Log &Transfer window. The clips will appear with a thumbnail. You can click on a clip to open it in the preview window, preview the clip by playing it, and - if you wish to import only a part of the clip - mark in and out points using the controls provided, before adding it to the queue for transcoding.

Just make sure that you have set your timeline settings to match your source settings using Easy Setup (from memory it's in the File menu). There should be an option for AVCHD 1080x1920 (assuming that the SR10 records at this resolution) - 50i for a PAL camcorder, or 60i for an NTSC camcorder (check your user's manual). With Final Cut Express you only have the option to convert AVCHD to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) but FCP may give you additional options, such as Apple ProRes. The latter will likely yield converted video of higher quality, but requires a bit more in terms of processing power.
