Transfer to externall hdd from cam. No PC

Guys im sure someone somewhere mentioned it was possible to transfer recorded files from a Sony SR11e to an external drive over usb without the need for a PC.

Basically im going on holiday and dont want to run out of space.

Has anyone done this at all?
Is there a certain external drive i need?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I am looking for the same answer. I am planing to take the camera with me on a 4 weeks trip to Thailand and I'm thinking about getting a LaCie 120GB Mobile disk to backup the cameras interal harddrive. If it would be possible to copy the files from the SR11 without a computer, it would be really great. Otherwise I guess I can find an internet cafe and use a computer there for my backups. Do I need to install the picture browser software in order to transfeer the files from the camera to the harddrive or can I just do it from the explorer window?

Re: Transfer to externall hdd from cam. No PC

As far as i gather the SR11 will just appear to a PC like an external USB device. Im not sure if you require drivers or not on the PC (i would assume so).

I guess you'd then just attach your external hdd also and then copy from one device to the other. From what i understand the recordings are just MTS files and unless you want to edit them you can just transfer things like copying files.

I ideally would like either the camera to see an external hdd like a memory card or something and b eable to copy across too, or an external hdd (with a bit of sw on it) to see the camera as a device and pull files from it.

Just need someone in the know to comment

Re: Transfer to externall hdd from cam. No PC

There are a couple of solutions to this....although I am not sure your thought that the camcorder will be able to copy directly to a usb hard drive is correct.

Firstly, I dont think you will run out of space but thats not the issue.

Second the camcorder breaks video into 2GB files regardless of how long you 'record' (see the handbook for this 'note')

Third, do you have a sony memory stick ?? (8GB is about £50 or less) and you can copy the 2GB files onto the card and then use a photo storage device to back up the files. No problems with this at all.

Forth, if you want to 'try' the USB hard disk route, then try this device or similar----but not rumoured to be that reliable.
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/reviews...ccessory.phtml

Personally I favour the copy to card and back up the card when on location, such as the on the go mentioned in the other thread or the ones such as http://www.vosonic.com/product.php?pkind=1
There are lots of these devices out there;http://www.storagedepot.co.uk/Digita...age/sc889.aspx
Take care with these devices though. Some create a new directory on disk for each backup from a card, others overwrite the same directory. The Vosonics type has a little more intelligence but is more expensive (you can view your fotos though !)

I really don't think you could copy directly from a camcorder to a USB HDD. Both the cam and HDD are slave devices that need to be controlled by a PC. Neither the cam or HDD will have software running on them to control the copying of files across to the other - the cam would assume this to be controlled by the PC and a HDD is purely a storage device with no processing power.

Mark.

Yeah. That was what i was thinking, its just someone mentioned it was feasible with an On The Go external hdd.

I haven't had time to look deeply into these vosonic devices yet, but they look like they maybe able to read off a memory card as a file system and copy to its own hdd. May be the only option.

Thats why I mentioned the USB Bridge. However if you investigate this, users have been frustrated.

I think the best solution is to copy files from the HD to the mem stick and then back up to a photo storage device (such as the ones I suggested)

The other option is to carry the Sony DVD burner which I have mentioned elsewhere, and due to the extra functionality, will be buying when funds allow !

I think that is correct, but as mentioned on another thread, the Sanyo HD1000 apparently supports this - you can connect any external HDD cam (not just "on the go" type storage solutions). So apparently the HD1000 can act as a "server"/master in this way.
I don't think the Sony (or Canon) ones do this.

That was the cam i saw which did it which made me beg the question if there was a way with the sonys.

Has anyone got a link to the Sony burner?

Cheers

But being as that is precisely what OTG devices are made to do wouldn't it be simpler to Google to find a good one and buy that?

I use a Nexto Multi 2325. Well, I bought one to use, haven't actually ever used it, if anybody wants one tell me and I'll put it in the classified section.

It is a good one, honest.

I think the confusion is that some, (Sanyo Xacti for example) cameras, can offload video files to external hard drives with no pcs.

Dude yeah ill have it! If it deffo can do what i need that would be cool.

Can i just ask though how do you operate the OTG to pull files off the camera? Has it got a screen or something so you know what you want to copy, and will it be able to pick the cam up as a usb device without additional drivers etc?

Re: Transfer to externall hdd from cam. No PC

Has anyone tried the Nano N1050 device to backup their SR11? I found a post in another forum about someone that succesfully backed up a HDR-SR1 with this device, but I'm not sure it will work with the SR10/SR11/SR12.
