Mpeg4 and my PS3

Hello, first thread/question so if its in the wrong place, I'm sorry.

Okay, I have just bought a new pocket camcorder that records in Mpeg4 format.

Its a Sanyo Xacti VPCHD700 HD and I'm really happy with it, as it fits in my back pocket and has a good picture for the size of camera, however there are a few issues that I need help with.

I'm using the bundled software with the camera to convert the Mpeg4 format into a file that can be read by Windows Media player, I use this player as I stream my pictures and music etc over to my PS3 and view them on the big TV in the lounge.

The software I am using is Adobe Premier Elements and it takes about 2 1/2 hours to convert a 6 minute clip!!!
Every movie trailer I have downloaded from the PSN Store onto my PS3 (1080p) are shown as Mp4.

So howcome when I plug my camera into the PS3 it won't show the clips on the camcorder?
Are Mp4 and Mpeg4 not the same?
Is there a quicker way of converting the files?
How do I install a Mp4/Mpeg4 codec so Media Player will play them?
When I convert to MediaPlayer files, the PS3 won't play the sound as its in WMA format, which is not supported by PS3.

I'm also using Vista Home, but may go back to XP MCE.

I tried Nero7, but that did something odd to my DVD burner and it wouldn't burn, was fine when I uninstalled Nero7.

Any help/advice would be very much appriciated.

Sorry for the randomness of this post, but its driving me up the wall!!

Re: Mpeg4 and my PS3

Nero 7 was hopeless, but the new Nero 8 seems okay and my DVD burner works!

I've got an old skool Sanyo CG6 pocket camcorder which isn't Hi Def like yours but records in Mp4, so hopefully this will work.

First of all I think there are different types of Mp4.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_2

differences in "Parts" and "Profiles" I'm not sure which one Sanyo uses but probably same as this..Sanyo Xacti HD2 (.mp4, MPEG 4 part 2 video, AAC audio) and I believe Mp4 and Mpeg4 are indeed the same.

The free K-Lite Codec enables mp4 playback with Windows Media Player, and a lot of other formats also, I highly recommend everyone to install this.. http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/

If you rename the extension of your video files from .mp4 to .avi you may be able to edit them in Windows Media Player (once you have installed the K-Lite Codec), which I believe is bundled free with XP and Vista. I can certainly edit my videos using it, although I have noticed on rare occassions some audio synch problems using Windows Media Player but it's not consistant.

Find Windows Media Player on your system, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Media Player

FYI I turn off the "Create Clips for Video Files" option when you open a video, then you don't get 100 thumbnails of clips slowing your PC to a halt, making editing virtually impossible, you don't need to work from pre-selected clips, just split the video in the preview where you want a new clip.

I hope that info works with Hi-Def videos too.. let me know how it works out.

Re: Mpeg4 and my PS3

MP4, Mpeg4 DIVX. xvid and the MP4 using Apple format and AAC audio that Sanyo has used are not derived from the same codec

Re: Mpeg4 and my PS3

I don't have a PS3 but i do have a Sanyo HD2, I believe the HD MP4 format may be the same.
Other users of the Sanyo's have reported on this forum that the PS3 will read the video clips straight from the SD card unedited.

Re: Mpeg4 and my PS3

They do from the HD1000 which is another of the various H.264 mpeg4 ( AVC-HD) codecs

Re: Mpeg4 and my PS3

i'm confused, some say sanyo camcorders will playback direct on the ps3 others say they won't, has anyone got a sanyo hd700 that will playback direct on the ps3 or the sd from the camcorder.

Re: Mpeg4 and my PS3

upload a clip from the cam and I can test, should not need to re-encode, found the best way to play a AVC/H264 file on media player is install some software like power dvd ultra which has a H264 decoder then simply use elecard xmuxer pro to convert the file from your cam to an avi stream, nothing is transcoded, so should be pretty much instant and media player will play it straight off... Avi with H264 video is the way to go, I do this with the H264 Blu ray rips or BBCHD captures, plays fine, s lon as you have a suitable audio decoder, i.e ac3/aac which power dvd comes with anyway..

xmuxer pro can convert to a .mp4 which the PS3 should be able to play natively, nothing is transcoded just the extension is changed and various information added/removed to make it an MP4 compliant stream, you cannot simply rename the file yourself have to pass it through a program like xmuxer which will make the stream conform to MP4/AVI specifications...
