Sony SR55 - advice on editing on an iMac

Hi team

I bought a Sony SR55 a few weeks ago and I've placed some video onto my hard-drive. Now I think it's in MPEG2 format which seems to cause Quicktime and iMovie a few problems. Any way around this?

I'd like something like iPhoto but as a video library. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Jay
