Video Editing

Hi,

I know this forum covers "Camcorders and Video Editing" but so many of the threads relate to camcorders only that I wonder whether it might not be sensibleto have a separate forum for camcorders and another one for video editing. I think this streamlining would probably make it easier for members who are interested in only one or the other.

Just a suggestion and in no way a criticism of the forum or its moderators , especially as the advice I have been given here at various times has always been readily given and has always been invaluable as well.

Regards,

Richard Jones

Re: Video Editing

It seems a very sound proposition on the face of it but

Given that a least some of those who buy camcorders want to edit , and others might later warm to the idea
and
The fact that there are different editing packages for the PC , and Mac

One would think editing queries here would be more but they are not

As such a forum like that might become very sparsely populated in time especially as many of the packages also have own dedicated forums

I must say as one who has used a large no of the Software ( apart from Premier pro CS3 and Final cut ,) I have often been able to give a tip or 3 and Mark ( redsox) seems to know Vegas quite well And a few others chip in now and again ( Jaymac) but Editing enquiries are very few for whatever reason. ( apologies in advance if you do come on board to help and Ive missed out your name )

I think in some way by emphasising that SD cards and HDD offer a quick way to make DVDs, and the current teething hardware and software AVCHD issues, there is a lack of common purpose between camcorder manufacturers and Video editing software developers ( apart from the traditional names) .
Camcorder manufacturers are keen to market their models as not needing "off camera" editing implying perhaps that editing is a bit geeky and for anoraks!!

For instance just like (tape models are getting scarce) New video editing software titles are almost non-existent as the current software titles fight hard for the "dwindling market"

There seems to be this need to just do in-camera editing ( if that) and get the video to you tube or an MP4 player ASAP

Look Here for editing only type threads

Smile Re: Video Editing

Tend to go along with Senu on this . Not too many people go for editng without using Cams as the source and quite often the problems one gets with either are closely linked .As said there are dedicated forums thoiugh some in my humble opinion not worth space .Also you never see any newbies here getting blasted with why did'nt you search blah blah. Trouble with some dedicated ones is dare to doubt the product and the clan is down on you like a ton of bricks. Having said that I am always ready to point to one particular site for help but usually say should you not get a suitable or fast enough response here . But dare say a few would agree with you

Re: Video Editing

I only come on here to see if there's anything about video editing/converting that I can help with.

Re: Video Editing

To me, these forums are generally about both buying and using the technology. To me, video editing is part of "using" a camcorder.

I guess an alternative view would is, where do people go if they have a query about editing something other than from a camcorder? I know in the DVD Recorders forum there is often discussion about video editing, based on DVD recorders.

So I can see an argument for having it separate, but I think it best combined with the technology (even if it means editing gets discussed in multiple places).

Re: Video Editing

Hi,

I can see the value of the points made by Senu, Mark and Jaymac.

It does seem, however, that many of the posts are concerned only with seeking advice or recommendations about which camera might be the most appropriate one to buy. This is someway distant from the "creative" side, whether that is to be done with or in the camera itself or as a separate editing function.

I suppose my point is that camera buying seems to have become a subject in its own right (and a large one at that) within the forum and I just wonder whether there might not be a case for separating this from the rest.

Just a thought!

Regards,

Richard Jones

Re: Video Editing

One thing that is possible would be to create an editing thread as a sticky ( like the current FAQ)
I agree that we get a lot of "which camcorder " questions . That is the trend , but as I stated above, the Editing queries are so Sparce that I suspect ( maybe wrongly) that a separate Editing Forum would suffer from very infrequent activity
I do not ( for the record) have anything against it at all if it serves a need

For what its worth I also mod and Im active on the Digital Camera Section which also has a lot of "What camera?" threads.

However it also has a lot of Photshop, Photoshop Elements and Post production techniques threads but It would seem there that they are infact best as one forum as the majority of those who enhance images in software are also the ones who take them
Im sure if there were graphic designers whose interest was mainly in graphic manipulation they might find the emphasis on cameras a tad tediuos but they would be in a very small minority

Re: Video Editing

Senu,

I'm in your hands (for God's sake don't take me too literally!) and don't feel at all strongly about it. This is still a useful and helpful forum and you deserve our thanks for keeping it on track. - and everybody who offers help here so freely deserves a warm 'thank you' as well.

Regards,

Richard Jones
