Broke my DV socket on camcorder, now what??!!

Hi all.
Just got a DV/firewire cable to learn how to transfer video to the PC, and somehow, I've managed to physically brake the DV socket on my camcorder!

So now that idea is out the window

Can anyone suggest another way to do it?

I have a Shap VL-Z5 corder (Mini DV) and I also have the VIVO option on my graphics card.

Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I see it you have tree options:

1. Send the camera to get repaired.

2. Buy a MiniDV deck.

3. Borrow another miniDV camcorder from someone.

I have a sony miniDV deck. I got it so i didn't have to use the camera every time I needed to capture my footage. Not cheap though.

I would think you would want to get the camera fixed but it may be cheaper to by a new one (or second hand one).

Re: Broke my DV socket on camcorder, now what??!!

Thanks for the reply.

All good idea's, but getting it repaired would most likely cost more than to buy a new one.

Had a quick look on fleabay for a deck, but none on there (will look on Amazon etc later....)
Also, I can still use it on the TV, just that I'd like to be able to transfer some precious footage on DVD for backup purposes more than anything.

I can get a hard drive camcorder for about £200, but that doesn't solve the issue of backing up my mini DV tapes sadly

Thanks again for the advice

Unless I am mistaken you can connect your camcorder to your PC via the USB cable. Ensure you install the driver first.

Tried that!
It just treats it like a digital camera (it takes pictures too).
No software or anything recognizes that there's video playing

Not with a miniDv camera. You need firewire for that.

If you're buying a new cam then you need to find a friend with a miniDV cam and borrow just so you can get you MiniDV footage off the tapes.

There are a few miniDV models which support full quality DV capture via USB, but they are rare, and you also need software which supports it. Most likely you will need to use Firewire.

Try using Windows Movie Maker. I believe your camcorder supports USB tranfers.

Re: Broke my DV socket on camcorder, now what??!!

I don't believe the VL-Z5 supports DV transfer over USB. The manual doesn't make any mention of it (it only describes using the USB for stills, and the DV/Firewire connection for video).
