Re: Sony HDR-SR12E

Unlikely. Unless it is stated to have analogue in? Why would you like to use it that way?
If it is to use it as a hardware method of turning analogue video into AVCHD , I don't believe you will find any HDD camcorder, , Hi def or Standard that will allow that ( there may be one or 2 very obscure ones but im yet to find)
Even in tape camcorders that have AV in, this will be for standard def only ( and they aren't that many now) and will not accept say macrovision protected material.

Senu is correct, it doesn't have analogue video input. And I don't know of any AVCHD cams which do.

Re: Sony HDR-SR12E

I have a SONY DCR PC100 DV Cam that i am about to Ebay to help fund the purchase of the HDR-SR12E and the PC100 allows recording though its Anologue ins Svid and Composite and of course the DV connection, I also have a Dozen older Hi8 anologue tapes that i want transfered to a digital medium but as yet i dont have a sutable Hi8 camera to do it, the reason i asked about the SR12E is that if it does have the facility to record from the Anologue connection then i would at some point when i find a Hi8 camera be able to transfer the footage over to a digital medium for editing and archiving, looks like i may have to hold onto the PC100 until iv'e transfered the HI8 tapes to it.

Thanks Dale.

Re: Sony HDR-SR12E

Unless you want to turn them to DV AVI on the PC, Digitising them could be as simple as hooking up a suitable Hi 8 playback device to a settop DVD Recorder
Also if you could lay hands on a Digital 8 camcorder ( one with with hi-8 backwards compatibility) that could digitise and transfer to a PC via firewire.
Given that you have 12 Hi-8 tapes, you would be looking at a large amount of HDD space if you capture as DV AVI. 13Gb/hr as you know from your DV camcorder
If you want to capture as mpeg ( as would be the case if the SR 12 could have done it) a settop DVD recorder route is worth considering.
If you got one with a HDD and recorded the tapes to that from a cheap or borrowed HI-8 playback device,
You could sell off ( or return if borrowed) the Hi 8 camcorder, and then make DVDs from your Settop recorder at your own leasure as the footage would be safely digitised on its HDD
A decent settop should not set you back that much.. and you could still sell it for something if find that you have limited use for it.
As such there are alternatives to using your PC100

Re: Sony HDR-SR12E

Take a look at this for your archiving. Burns direct to disk from almost anything as far as I can see (Sky, VHS, HI8, MiniDV, HDV and AVCHD)

I have just purcahsed the HDR-SR12 and, as has been said, it doesnt have an AV in. I also have a DCR-PC105 which I will keep because it DOES have the AV in feature !!

Wise man... They really dont make them like that anymore.
Unfortunately the OP still has to find himself Something with which to play the Hi8 tapes before he can use the rather tidy product you linked
Will it do menus though?

Re: Sony HDR-SR12E

Thanks for the replys chaps, i actually got a decent HI8 Camcorder off Ebay a few months back but once i began trying to edit with Premiere Elements 4 i realised that the Camcorder was only outputing Mono from its Audio out now that was a suprise i just asumed it would be Stereo since my original HI8 CCD-V600 was donkeys old and stereo, the 12 tapes i have are all High quality Stereo recordings which i don't want to lose, anyway i am looking at Ebay again see if i can source an HI-8 Cam that outputs Stereo.

If you can get a Digital8 ( most of the earlier models play Hi 8 tapes) and digitise them internally outputting via firewire;
That would use firewire to the PC and you would get the audio as stereo ( and not need the PC 100)
