Which Tripod For Canon XL1?

Hey All,

Im really after a steady Tripod not to pricey for my Canon XL1

If any of you know what camera im talking about, its a very large and very heavey camera.

Would like a to be pointed in the right direction of which tripod to go for.

Why would you think we wouldn't know it?
I agree that it is bigger than the average pocket sized camcorder and would prove heavy to handhold after a while
However it is the why you need one that should dictate what you get , not just " not too pricey".
The XL1 is a pricey camcorder and would not be well served by one of the £20-50 tripods which will most certainly be too light for it, both for support, and for steadiness during shooting
Bedsides these are more than likely to have been designed for still cameras and you would not get any decent panning motion off them
I suggest you name a budget and see if something affordable but appropriate for its size will be suggested

A decent second hand one may be better than a "so so" new one so dont discount that as a option

Re: Which Tripod For Canon XL1?

Agree with Senu, it depends on your budget.
The XL1 is large/heavy compared to today's comsumer cams (1.7 kg), but that is not that heavy. For a value solution, take a look at the Velbon DV7000. I've seen it as cheap as £74 (here) http://www.devoncamera.co.uk/index.c...essional+Video
It takes camcorders up to a weight of 4.5 kg, and will have no problems supporting the XL1. The tripod itself is heavy and solid at 3.37 kg.

You can pay more, but when I was shopping I found the DV7000 panning as smooth as Manfrotto ones in the £200 range.

Re: Which Tripod For Canon XL1?

I've been very impressed with the Velbon DV7000 when I've used that with a VX2100, so if it says it's OK with the weight of the XL1 I can recommend it too. My friend with an XL1s has got a lovely Manfrotto which I think was £400 (sorry can't remember the model number), which is a bit more of a step up £££...

Re: Which Tripod For Canon XL1?

Interesting thread, is anyone familiar with this tripod ?

http://www.devoncamera.co.uk/index.c...on_cx686_video

Quite a reasonable price on ebay
Is it robust enough for a Canon HG10?

TIA

Re: Which Tripod For Canon XL1?

It is another good value tripod from Velbon. Not as stable as the DV7000, but not as heavy either. Certainly will do a decent job and be fine with your HG10.

This combination legs/head is pretty popular with the Z1 brigade

Rightly so given the cost of the Z1.
It seems way too costly for the OP though. Even with an FX1 I would happily use one on hire but need to seriously justify purchasing it

I think that's the one my friend uses with his XL1s (or a very similar Manfrotto model), and is a delight to use. I have heard the ball-park figure that "they" say you should look at spending around 10% of your camcorder price on your tripod - so a £3.5k camera would be looking at around £350... It depends what you'll be using it for, and how much. I'd say you would notice the difference from the £80 Velbon, but if "not too pricey" is important, I should think you'd do well with that.
