Video Format

Hi
Thinking of buying a camcorder to edit on my computer and at some time output to a DVD player. Can someone explain to me what are the differences in the file formats i.e. AVI, Mpeg 2, Mpeg 4, DIVX and can a program like premiere convert from one to the other?
Thanks
Phil

AVI - The file format of digital camcorders
MPEG-1 - VCD format
MPEG-2 - DVD & SVCD format
MPEG-4 - A format for web based video
DivX - MPEG-4 with quality up to around that of a DVD

Premiere with its plug-ins can convert to many of the video formats.

There are literally hundreds of plug-ins for Premiere, differing in price & quality etc.

Found this on the Adobe web site about Premiere 6.5 (latest version)

Take advantage of flexible output options
Output your video productions to DVD and other leading video formats.

Export in multiple formats
Export to the latest Windows Media format.

Render projects in multiple formats — including DVD, Super Video CD, and Video CD — directly from the Timeline with the new Adobe MPEG Encoder (Windows only).

Author DVDs with ease using the included Sonic DVDit! LE software (Windows retail product only).

Create DVDs by exporting MPEG-2 files straight from the Timeline thanks to improved integration with Apple DVD Studio Pro* (Macintosh only).

* Sold separately

Produce video for the Web
Apply streaming video presets for all major streaming formats, including Windows Media, RealMedia, and QuickTime.

Use chapter markers to provide quick access to specific sections of video in your exported movies.
