Camcorder to DVD Help

Please how do I ( If at all possible) copy 30 mins of Skiing video (Sony DCR-HC27 Mini DV) to a DVD. I have managed to download it to an external hard drive. Plus play it via my TV. But would like to make a few DVD copies to give to friends.

Also I have tried copying the materiel from the Camcorder to Sony Vegas but after approx 15mins My laptop seems to freeze up and the fan runs for what seems to be an eternity. (Laptop Spec :- 60GB HDD. 1.25 GB Ram)

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure from your post what is happening. You say you have already copied it to an external HDD.. then you say you are trying to copy from the camcorder to Vegas?

Capture to the PC (whether an external or internal HDD) happens in real time, and puts little load on the PC. If it is the capture which is hanging, try capturing with another program, even Windows Movie Maker.

Once on the PC/HDD, you will need to edit and convert to MPEG2/DVD format; this can take some hours, depends on the speed of your PC and software used. As it is CPU intense, expect the fan to be on to cool the CPU. This will be the case regardless of the software used.

Thanks for the quick reply Jaymac. Are you saying then, once I have created the first DVD I can then use that as a Master to copy quick copies to more DVDs or do I have to the 'over night' procedure every time ?

Re: Camcorder to DVD Help

When you create the dvd at the same time you will have a disc image saved which you can then use to make more copies they will only take minutes
But I sais this is only a work around to play with .Do consider Marks posting re the correct way to go

Re: Camcorder to DVD Help

TryWINDV . it is a free small program which you can use to capture

Ulead Movie Factory can help you capture, encode to mpeg and create a DVD

As has been explained , the captured DV AVI will need to be encoded to mpeg 2 and turned to DVD; All this Ulead Movie factory can do automatically
One way of ensuring this is only done once is to create a Disc image or DVD folder on your HDD

NB: edited post.. the original was lost in cyber space due in part to naff refresh on here,
Thankfully the OP got to see it before that

Re: Camcorder to DVD Help

Many Thanks Jamac, Mark, and Senu for the prompt advise. Vegas is a trial 30 day version of Platinum. I have D/L Windows Movie Maker and successfully copied the tape to that. So I think something may have been wrong with the trial Vegas. Going to now try and burn a DVD as per your recommendations. Think I'll leave the editing until later, can't take to much in at once. Having said that , once edited the DVD will only be approx 5 mins long ! I'm rubbish with computers and definitely no Martin Scorsese !

I wouldn't so much as say that. Don't let these hiccough put you off

Shame about the Vegas trial.
TBH Some video footage doesnt need editing and some cannot be redeemed by editing ( no matter how skilfully) but editing can be fun, addictive and the result very pleasing.
Editing can be a simple matter of trimming "rubbish" footage or putting better footage together the right order. infact many BBc, Sky program have been skilfully edited and you dont know as they dont have a myriad of effects, titles ect...
Take your time but do your footage a favour.. a little editing will show that you cared enough to " tidy it up"

Re: Camcorder to DVD Help

I don't believe the trial versions of Vegas support convering to MPEG2 for DVD, due to licensing issues.

Re: Camcorder to DVD Help

Thanks once again chaps, with your help I've cracked it ! Mini DV to Laptop. Laptop to authoring and burning software. Burning Software to DVD. DVD to HDD + DVD Recorder. HDD to as many DVDs as required ! The best bit was the time taken to copy from the Camcorder to the master DVD ejecting, was 50 minutes from 28 minutes of DV footage. So anyone interested in an action packed DVD Ski Flaine 2008 the un-cut version. Credits :- Cameraman - Bigbaz. Technical assistants :- Redsox_mark, Senu, and jamac. Price £2.50
