UK Sony Camera used Canadian TV ?

This will sound like a stupid question but ...

If I am using my SONY HDR - HC7 PAL video camera recording HD on tape and I plug it into a Canadian HD TV via HDMI would it work, IS HD - HD or is it PAL /SECAM etc.

Thanks

If it's an HDTV it should work. Most of them are multi format.

Agree, it should work.

IS HD - HD or is it PAL /SECAM etc.

Technically speaking the terms PAL and NTSC only apply to standard defintion, but in terms of HD, in the "PAL" parts of the world it is 25 fps, in the NTSC parts of the world it is 30 (29.97) fps. The colour and resolution is the same.

All of the HDTVs I've seen here accept either frame rate. I expect the Canadian ones will also.

Re: UK Sony Camera used Canadian TV ?

well i couldnt get it to work on the HD Tv i was using in canada but in the end but didnt have instructions so it may have just been me.

We are looking at moving to canada in the not to distant future, I have a Sony HDR HC7 in the PAL format, if and when we move will I be able to use the footage captured on it - on NTSC TV's assuming i've edited on my pc and burnt it onto DVD.

Or to put it another way can i convert PAL HDV into NTSC HDV or will I have to buy another video camera for long term use ?

Unlikely, for some reason the DVD players and TV sets here seem to be NTSC friendly, The converse is not the case

Im not sure what happened with your little experiment but as explained above, for HDV it should not matter, for SD ( which you downconvert the HDV to to make DVDs) it will
Certainly there is nothing to stop you from transcoding PAL SD footage to NTSC ( in software on the PC) for the sake of making DVDs with possibly minimal Loss in quality ( if at all)
While it is better to have an NTSC model if you will be there for the long haul. If there is any chance you will be needing to send stuff here, I would hold on to the PAL model for now.
