Sony HDR-HC5E any experience?

Hi Guys,
I am in the market for my first Camcorder as I have my first child on the way in April
I was wondering if anyone has experience with the HC5E, as I have seen in in COSTCO for just over £400 which seems pretty good.
I will be using it for everyday sort of stuff, and editing on a G5 iMac for the time being, and will probably get some sort of High Def burner in the future.
Playback through a Sammy M87 LCD.
Any thoughts, as ever all help gratefully received!

There are 6 mixed reviews on the Amazon website http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-HDR-SR5...ustomerReviews

I can't make my mind up about this particular camcorder.

I think thats a different model, with a Hard Drive, the HC5E is tape based.
But thanks for the input.

Re: Sony HDR-HC5E any experience?

The HC5 is fine.. It records Hi Def to tape and records standard def as well. It is small, but wel built

I have seen it in Comet for even a little Less; ( £380) it is described as a "Discontinued line" . This accounts for the low price. not that Sony need to "get rid" of it

If you are happy with HDV rather than AVCHD , Save your pennies and buy with confidence

HC5 is a good HDV camcorder; doesn't have all the features of the HC7/HV20 (e.g. no external mic input), but quality is close to them.. for < £400 it's a great deal.

Re: Sony HDR-HC5E any experience?

Can't fault the quality of this camera...

However.... Has anybody else had problems editing the HD video from this camera. When I bring HD onto computer via sony vegas, hdvsplit, or pinnacle the scene detection falls over... I get 3 frames from the next scene on the end of every scene.

I've been through a 3 month excercise with Sony Software support but with no resolution. I've returned the camera for warranty repair, but it was sent back "no fault found".

I have tried different computers with different operating systems.

If I use the camera's built in function to output down converted SD then all is OK. I now have rather a lot of footage I am unable to compile into any sort of sensible video.

Anybody successfully editing HD from this camera or its brothers HDR-HC7E / HDR-HC9E?

Re: Sony HDR-HC5E any experience?

I get 3 frames from the next scene on the end of every scene.

Capturing with Vegas with scene detection does this (well actually I get more like 2 extra frames at the start and 1 at the end). It's a known issue, which Sony doesn't seem to accept as a bug. There is a script (which I can send you) which removes the offending frames.

But I've not seen it crash. I tend to use HDVsplit instead of Vegas for capture, and it gets the scene detection correct.

I have a HC1.

At least I now know that there is someone else "suffering" with this problem.

There seems to be little (that I can find) relating to this on t'internet. Are you able to provide links to related articles/forums/blogs?

I've sent you a private message with my email address. I would be very pleased to see that script!!

Re: Sony HDR-HC5E any experience?

Here is an old thread from the Vegas forum (it is where I got the script from)
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/...171&replies=35

HDVsplit generally seems to avoid this issue for most people. It all has to do with the GOP structure and complexity of splitting on an I frame.

Re: Sony HDR-HC5E any experience?

Thanks for the link... it certainly makes for interesting reading. And thanks for the script. For others reading this... you can only run scripts under the Pro version of Vegas.
