Burning dvds with iMovie 08 from AVCHD

Hello again

I think I have decided to buy the Panasonic SD5 soon, and a new Mac at the end of this year.
I will save the footage on the cards till then, and burn onto dvd using iMovie.
Will the discs I create then play on any stand alone dvd player, I would like to give copies to my Grandma!
My TV doesn't have HDMI sockets, will it still be decent quality to watch until then using a different connection?
Has anyone else read that a new Mac will be released soon with a Blu Ray writer?

Thank you

Lynn

The only discs which will play on any standalone DVD player are standard def DVD video discs. You can downconvert and do this. I.e. Grandma can watch, but not in high definition.

That's OK, I don't think she has a hi def TV or anything like. Just bog standard

Should the quality be OK though? Don't expect Hollywood, just decent home movies.

Also been looking at the SD1. That's more expensive than the SD5, and I wondered if anyone knows why?

Yes, it will still look good when converted (just not as good as HD).

The SD1 and SD5 are both discontinued (the SD5 just recently), so prices tend to vary. There were some real bargins on the SD1 a couple of months ago.
