I do have a Sony HC1 and FX 1 HDV.. which are better than what any current AVCHD camcorder can do. The FX1 more so
I must say that the Canon HV20 (HDV) is very impressive for the money though.
The only advantage of a HDD model would be
Freedom from Real time firewire transfer to PC
No Limitation of 1 hr on recording
No need for "tapes"
Prior to using the HG 10 I would have said.. AVCHD camcorders would struggle for Quality compared to tape of similar cost . In most ways that isn't true any more but the better tape models still handle low light and rapid movt better. In good lighting Video quality is near identical.
Also Not owning a quad core PC with 2Gb of RAM. I find AVCHD is hard work to play and edit ..for now
I would love to have one ( if i could get it for a huge discount) as It really has the fun factor and very impressive HD video quality to match.. just charge the battery and away you go..
FWIW though the HDD and Flash card AVCHD camcorders are aimed squarely at the consumer market and you would be ill advised to use them for a Commercial or Serious project (except as a back up) . This is because these projects can sometimes push camcorders (and their operators) to its limits .. In these instances the consumer oriented roots will become apparent
The little "Videographer friendly" manual features that make a difference are often not present as a typical home user will not be expected to need them
It remains to be seen if they will remain consumer items or aspire to Prosumer/ Semi Pro levels with the appopriate improvements
