Mini DV transfer to Hard drive - massive files - NOW PC STUCK!

Hi All

Hoping someone might be able to help.

I'm trying to transfer a mini dv video to my hard drive. However a 50 minute video on Sony Vegas is creating a 13gig file which my pc just can't handle.

What methods does everyone else use to get a decent quality transfer but avoiding such a large file being created?

Thanks

Re: Mini DV transfer to Hard drive - massive files

DV AVI uses 13Gb for 1 hr of footage. This unfortunately is fixed . Obviously DVD is 4.7Gb so the use of space falls when a DVD is made , but temporary file are created which use up more space. these can be deleted after the editing
How can your PC not "handle" it? .Processor? RAM??

It is possible to capture to a fast External HDD if space is at a premium but your PC should not need to load the whole file at once as capture usually involves the use of clips.
Some software allow you to download as the smaller mpeg2 by encoding "on the fly" but this is processor intensive and can impact on quality as several rerenders ( as will happen during editing) will lead to degrading of video quality. The only other way i can think of is to capture in small amounts and delete the original files as the PC fills up
The simple solution is more HDD space.

Re: Mini DV transfer to Hard drive - massive files

I've just tried again with a 50 minute Mini DV transfer to my pc. After the 50 minute ended I stopped the camcorder and the programme (Sony Video Capture) has now been busy (hour glass constant) for the past 2 hours and I can't access any other programmes.

Is this normal? I know its going to be 12-13 gig file but how long should it take?

My spec are:

AMD 6000 x2
2gig Ram
8800 gt
400gig Hard drive
Window XP

Any ideas?

i use external hard drives for capturing and storing my video but the pc spec you show should have no problems capturing your 50 min video i can only think it is possibly a software problem have you tried any others.

Re: Mini DV transfer to Hard drive - massive files

DV capture is realtime, so a 50 min tape will take 50 mins. Indeed sounds like the software has failed.

That would seem likely, unless your system is reporting less HDD space than it has

Try
THIS for captutring, you shouldn't need to use more than real time to capture
