Sony DCR SR 33 videos issues

HI

done a search but struggling a bit. So I apologise in advance if there is a massive thread on this.

I have a Sony DCR SR 33 HD camera and I have spent a lot of time over xmas recording stuff. Each bit of filming has created a .modd and a .mpg file. I have a imac running Leopard and I want to use imovie to stick the files together and edit them but I get an error message when I try to play them of import them

it says the file is not a movie file in quicktime.

So please help how can view these?

Re: Sony DCR SR 33 videos issues

I have the same problems with my DCR-sr72 camera. It is only viewable on my Pc with Sony's own Picture Motion Browser that comes with the camera. It is no problem to cut movies, but I have not found out how to merge clips together and convert the files to other formats.

The movies can be shown on Tv by connecting the camera to the Tv and through an A/V cable. I have not tried that. You can also easily burn movies to DVD's with the Picture Motion Browser, so may be that does the necessary conversion.

Re: Sony DCR SR 33 videos issues

Am i right in believing that these cameras output video in MPEG 2 format - if so do I just need the quicktime MPEG 2 element?

That is correct. I am new to movie editing, but know that there are many tools to edit movies like:
  1. http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/ The best?
  2. http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/
  3. http://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/index.asp
  4. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...viemaker2.mspx
It should be able to
  1. Cut and merge movie clips.
  2. Change the format so the movies can be viewed in other programs like Windows Media Player.

Re: Sony DCR SR 33 videos issues

It might be better to Create a thread asking what software people use to edit their mpeg2 files from SD HDD camcorders

PMB is ...

I know the above poster is trying to be helpful help but is Adobe Premiere really the "best" ??
It is one of the "industry standard" costly and very newbee unfriendly
Final Cut Pro is very good but Mac Only. Im sure FC express or even imovie08 should do it
Avid Xpress Pro is also Very good but complicated and probably cost way more than the camcorder itself

The one thing all these have is cost and complexity that may be OTT for the purposes of simple editing from mpeg2 files from a modest SD HDD camcorder
Im not sure what a *.modd file is but I imagine it is not the video file,
It seem more like an information file in which the camcorder uses to name and locate its clipa but you dont need for editing

Re: Sony DCR SR 33 videos issues

right I've sorted it.

I downloaded the MPEG2 plug in for Quicktime and then MPEG Streamclip - - this allows me to convert to different formats and it works in imovie now

Re: Sony DCR SR 33 videos issues

Is there a similar plugin for Windows mediaplayer?

I get an error when trying to play the files in that player.

Help on the web takes me to this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...nalid=C00D109B

When I open the .modd and the .mpg file in "Sony's Picture motion browser" both versions are viewd the same and in the same quatlity as far as I can see.

*.modd is not a video file and will not play in WMP.
IF using Windows , Try VLC or GOM
players.
WMP can be fussy even if you have the right codecs on your system

Well Premier is not the best, Final Cut is! and with the Final cut Suit 2 you dont need anything else!
