My question is - can the images saved on the video cassette be downloaded to my Apple Mac G5 computer, reading the literature that came with the equipment it seems I can download from the memory card, but does not explain how to get the images from the cassette, any help would be much appreciated.

It is a DV camcorder, so you capture using Firewire.
I don't use a Mac, but iMovie should capture it.
