Question JVC GR-DF470 USB Driver - W2k

I am trying to transfer video from my JVC GR-DF470 Camcorder to my laptop operating under Windows 2000 using the USB cable.
  1. I connect the USB cable to the laptop and the camera.
  2. Turn the camera onto "Play" and the camera screen show the PC symbol.
  3. My laptop detects the GR-DF470 and asks for the location of the driver.
Where can I find this driver? I have searched with Google and through the JVC web site and can find nothing.

Is it possible to transfer data from my camcorder to my laptop using the USB connection? If so, where can I find suitable driver software?

BTW, I cannot connect to my laptop using FireWire without upgrading the motherboard. That is why I need to use the USB connection.

I don't think its possible to transfer video over USB. You can only transfer photos taken with the video camera in photo mode. To transfer video you need to use a firewire cable.

I am in the process of getting this up and running so I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: JVC GR-DF470 USB Driver - W2k

Why cant you use firewire? It should not need more than an add on Pci card ( £ 10 or so) as Win 2K has firewire drivers built in Just read your post it is a laptop.. even they have have PCMCIA or PC express firewire card that should not require a MB upgrade. My laptop does noy have built in firewire but a PCMCIA card sorts that out

DV capture via USB is possible but quite rare and the USB on your JVC is probably for transfer of stills, or low quality video, not DV however JVC claims otherwise.and any such driver should be
1 ) in a CD that came with the camcorder
or
2) Incorporated in the Cyberlink SE software that accompanies such camcorders for the purpose of USB capture

Re: JVC GR-DF470 USB Driver - W2k

Sorry I had reread the post: A PCMCIA or PC express fire wire adaptor should do the trick rather than need to change MB

JVC does claim that you can use USB to transfer DV with this model but un less it is in a CD that comes with it or in corporated with cyber link SE version that ships with it I would try to use fire wire as it is more universally compatible with most other softwarea

I didn't have much luck I'm afraid . Having done some surfing it seems JVC DV camcorders can by fussy about the manufacturer of Firewire card. Apparently it has to be a Texas Instrument (TI) chipset - my inbuilt firewire on my laptop is not TI.

Has anyone else come across this?

Re: JVC GR-DF470 USB Driver - W2k

The initial problem with firewire cards was that some hardware would really not work with one which didnt have the Texas instruments chipset or "OHCI compliant" 1394 Host controller, of which Adaptec , NEC and VIA (amongst others) made
Some firewire controllers which were attached to Creative labs cards did not exhibit universal compatibility in this way but I thought this was by now a thing of the past especially as the drivers are Windows built in ones..
